Nodaway Valley Cross Country Coach Darrell Burmeister 2016 Recipient of IGHSAU Golden Plaque Award



DES MOINES — Nodaway Valley coach Darrell Burmeister is the 2016 cross country recipient of the Iowa Girls’ High School Athletic Union’s Golden Plaque of Distinction Award. Burmeister will be honored in a presentation prior to the Class 1A boys awards ceremony at the 2016 State Cross Country Meet Saturday, October 29 in Fort Dodge.
The Iowa Girls’ High School Athletic Union’s Golden Plaque of Distinction Award honors the Iowa coach who has demonstrated a successful career while making notable contributions toward school, community and the coaching profession.
Burmeister has been the girls and boys cross country coach at Nodaway Valley since 1996. During his tenure, he won two boys 1A state cross country championships and coached the Wolverine girls to the Class 1A state crown in 2009. In addition to the championships, three of his teams have placed second while another two finished third. Nodaway Valley has won 29 Pride of Iowa Conference championships while 25 teams have competed at the State Cross Country Meet under his watch.
Burmeister has collected numerous coaching honors throughout his coaching career. He earned National Cross Country Coach of the Year awards from both the National Federation of High School Associations (NFHS) and the National High School Athletic Coaches Association. He has been named the state coach of the year four times and southwest Iowa coach of the year eight times.  Burmeister has served on the joint Track and Field Advisory Committee and has hosted many camps and clinics.
Burmeister has also enjoyed a successful career coaching prep boys basketball. His 534 career wins rank 10th on Iowa’s list of active basketball coaches. He has guided six teams to the state basketball tournament and won the 2006 Class 2A boys state title.
Burmeister  has two children, Jenna and Jordan. He teaches economics, government and social studies at Nodaway Valley.
