Beavers Put Scare In Highly Ranked Solon

SOLON — On paper, the Beavers didn’t have a chance.  The Solon Spartans are the second ranked team in class 3A and have lost only one game, a one-run contest against Dyersville-Beckman.  The doubleheader last Saturday June 3.  There, the Beavers lost game one 8-7 and game two 5-1.
In game one, Wilton sent a message that they were here for two games in the first inning.  That’s when catcher Emily Lange drilled a two-run home run, the Beavers 13th as a team in 13 games, to take an early 2-0 lead.  Wilton led 3-0 on an Alexis Maurer double that scored Allison Bosten.  Solon tied the score at 3-3 after two innings and the game was close the rest of the way.  Solon took an 8-3 lead to the top of the seventh, but Wilton scored four runs on five hits to get the score to 8-7.  Chloe Wells and Falloyn Grunder each had RBI’s in the inning.  The Beavers tied the game at 7 to force extra innings.  Solon won the game in the bottom of the 8th inning.
Wilton had 10 hits in the game, led by Emily Lange, Kortney Drake and Falloyn Grunder who each had two hits.  Grunder took the loss after pitching 7 1/3 innings.  She struck out five, and only walked one batter.
Kayla West pitched the final 1 1/3 innings in relief of starter McKenna Miller to get the win.  Miller gave up seven runs on nine hits, but struck out seven.  West gave up no runs and no hits.  The Spartans top of the order did the most damage going a combined 8-for-13 with two doubles and 4 RBI’s.
In game two, Wilton fell 5-1.  Wells was the losing pitcher after six innings of work.  Sehe gave up seven hits and struck out two.  Six different Beavers had hits - Wells, Amanda Fowler, Emily Lange, Allison Bosten, Falloyn Grunder and Alexis Maurer.
Solon broke a scoreless tie in game two with a 3-run fourth.  Wilton trimmed the Spartan lead to 3-1 going to the bottom of the sixth, but a 2-run sixth extended Solon’s lead to 5-1.
Kayla West, game one winner, was the winning pitcher after seven innings of work.  She struck out five and gave up four hits.  McKenna Miller was 3-for-3 and Taylor Ryan 2-for-2 with 3 RBI’s for Solon.

Beavers Win Third In a A Row With Fort Madison Sweep
WILTON — The Wilton softball team sent Ft. Madison to their fourth straight loss with two lopsided victories over the larger MAC school on Thursday, June 1.  Wilton won both games by the 10-run mercy rule.  The Beavers improved to 9-3.
Ft. Madison stunned the Beavers in game one with a three run top of the first, but the Beavers responded by dropping nine runs on them in the bottom of the first.  Wilton sent 12 batters to the plate in the first inning and had six hits.  Chole Wells hit a one-out home run to put the score at 3-1.  The next five Beavers reached base and scored.  Falloyn Grunder had a RBI single and Karlie Schult a 2-run double.  Wells became the first Beaver to homer twice in an inning this season after hitting a 3-run homer in her second at-bat of the inning to push the score to 9-3.  She was 2-for-2 with 4 RBI’s in the first inning.
Wilton had 14 hits in the game led by Well and Grunder wtih three each.  Schult, , Emily Lange, Grunder and Alexis Maurer each had 2 RBI’s.  Wilton stole six bases and drew six walks in the game.
Falloyn Grunder settled down after the first two innings to get the win.  Grunder allowed one-run over the final three innings of the game.  She struck out one and walked two.
In game two, Wilton won 10-0 in five innings.  Wilton again started strong, scoring seven combined runs in the first two innings with three in the first and four in the second.
Two home runs accounted for the first inning runs.  Wells belted her third homer of the night with a solo shot in the first and Emily Lange followed two batters later with a 2-run homer.  Amanda Fowler, Kortney Drake and Alexis Maurer each had RBI hits in the 4-runs second.
Fowler and Lange each had four hits and Wells had three to give Wilton 11 of their 15 hits from the heart of their batting order.
Wells got the win after pitching five innings and giving up two hits and no runs.  She struck out one and walked no batters.

Beavers Get Win At Goose Lake, Behind 6 Extra Base Hits
GOOSE LAKE — After a tough loss to Bellevue on Tuesday, the Beavers picked up a big road victory at NE Goose Lake, 12-8 on Thursday.  The Beavers smashed three home runs to bring their season team total to   nine.  The Beavers 2-4 hitters each homered.  The Beavers scored four runs in the top of the first inning and never trailed in the game.  Wilton led 5-0, 7-2, 9-3 and scored three runs in the top of the seventh to take a 12-6 lead.
Falloyn Grunder was the winning pitcher after seven innings of work.  She gave up five runs and struck out one batter.  
Wilton had 13 hits including six extra base hits.  The Beavers had three doubles and three home runs in the game.  The Beavers second and third hitters combined to go 7-for-8 with 2 doubles, two home runs, 6 RBI’s, eight runs scored, 3 stolen bases and two walks.  Chloe Wells was 4-for-4 and was a triple away from hitting the cycle.  She had a single, double, home run, walk, stolen base and RBI and scored five runs. Amanda Fowler was 3-for-4 with a home run and 5 RBI’s, two stolen bases, a walk and three runs scored.  Emily Lange hit a home run and drove in three while Kortney Drake, Allison Bosten, Falloyn Grunder, Alexis Walker and Alexis Maurer each had hits in the game.
The win snapped a two-game win streak by the Rebels.  Alyssa LIvesay was the losing pitcher after five innings of work.  Bree Mangelsen was 3-for-4 and three others had two hits each.  NE Goose Lake hit two home runs of their own in the game.

Beavers Bats Silenced Against Monticello
WILTON — It was a tough night hitting for the Wilton softball team in a 5-1 non-conference loss to Monticello on Tuesday, May 30.  The Beavers had only three hits in the game, all were singles.  Karlie Schult, Amanda Fowler and Kortney Drake collected the hits.  Chloe Wells drove in the only run of the game for Wilton.
Falloyn Grunder was the losing pitcher after staring and lasting three innings.  She gave up three runs on seven hits.  Chloe Wells pitched four innings in relief and gave up two hits, two runs and struck out two.

Beavers Upset 15th ranked Wapello
WILTON — The Wilton Beavers started a busy week with an upset win over class 2A #15 Wapello by ten runs, 12-2.  The win was sweet for the Beavers after the Arrows eliminated them last year in the Regional Tournament at home, 5-4.  Seven of the starting nine players by the Arrows were in the starting line-up against the Beavers this year in the  lopsided win by Wilton.  The Beavers scored 11 of their 12 runs in the game in the first three innings.  A 3-run first was followed by 4-run second and third innings to take command of the game 11-0.  The Beavers batted through their order twice in the game that lasted five innings.
Wilton’s 1-3 hitters combined to go 7-for-10 with 7 RBI’s.  Chloe Wells was 3-for-4 with a home run including a grand slam in the third inning.
Wilton had three hits in the first inning with Kortney Drake getting an RBI single, Falloyn Grunder a RBI double and Emily Lange driving in a run on a ground out.  In the second inning, three runs came from back-to-back hits on a Well RBI single and an Amanda Fowler 2-run double.
Drake joined Wells with three hits while Karlie Schult and Fowler each had two hits.  Falloyn Grunder was the winning pitcher after working three innings, scattering three hits and allowing no runs.

Abby Kerr and Addisyn Loling along with teammates Mady Reid and Smantha Smith all are batting over .400 for the season.  In the Wilton game, they combined to bat 4-of-9, but none of them drove in a run, and only one run was scored among them.  Samantha Smith took the loss after 2 2/3 innings after giving up 11 runs on nine hits and walking four Beavers.  Wapello started the season 4-0, but has lost two of their last three games.
