Beavers Remain #1, Get Big wins, lost first 2017 Game


WILTON — It was quite a week for the Wilton baseball team.  The Beavers remained the top-ranked team in class 2A after ascending to the perch the second week of the season.  The Beavers played five games and beat state ranked Regina Monday, and lost to Davenport Central on Tuesday.  Wilton won their next two games, on the road at Camanche and at home last Friday against Easton Valley.

Beavers Sweep Regals in Iowa City
IOWA CITY — The Wilton baseball team swept the Iowa City Regina Regals last Monday by scores of 7-2 in game one and 3-0 in game two.  The wins gave the Beavers the inside track on the RVC South Division title, despite the season only two weeks old.  The Beavers improved to 8-0 against Regina in the four-year history of the RVC, during the regular season.  The Beavers beat Regina 16-7 and 15-8 at Regina in 2015.
In game one, Cory Anderson was the winning pitcher after allowing no runs or hits in the final three innings of relief of starter Evan Reifert.  Anderson struck out two.  Reifert struck out 10 in five innings and gave up two runs.
Wilton led 2-1 after two innings having scored single runs in each of the first two innings.  Regina tied the game at 2-2 after four innings.  The game went to extra innings, where the Beavers put up five runs in the top of the eighth inning to take a 7-2 lead.
Wilton had seven hits, led by Tyler Hartman who was 2-for-4 with a double and RBI.  Kaleb Timmsen and Jared Townsend each had a hit and 2 RBI’s.
Masen Miller was the losing pitcher for Regina after giving up three runs on three hits in the eighth.  Ryne Schooley started and pitched six innings and struck out nine.
In game two, Colin McCrabb and Jared Townsend combined for a seven-inning no hitter.  Townsend started and pitched the first 3 1/3 innings allowing no runs and striking out seven.  McCrabb struck out eight and walked no Regal batters.
Wilton scored single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to get the 3-0 lead.  Tyler Hartman was 4-for-4 with a RBI and ended the night with six hits in the two games.  Cory Anderson and Townsend each had two hits in the game.

Beavers Fall To Davenport Central
WILTON — The Beavers fell to MAC conference school Davenport North last Tuesday in a non-conference match-up, 12-2.  The Beavers used the game as a bullpen game, getting four guys work in the game.  Sophomore Ashton Stoelk started and pitched four innings.  He took the loss after giving up three runs on six hits.  He struck out two and walked three.  Brock Hartley pitched two inning in relief followed by Chantz Stevens and Jake Lenker.  Stoelk, Hartley and Stevens are all sophomores.
Wilton trailed 2-1 after four innings, but a six-run top of the fifth by Davenport Central was the difference.
Wilton had only four hits in the game, one each from Evan Reifert, Lenker, Cory Anderson and Jared Townsend.  Reifert and Brady Barrett each had RBI’s in the game.

Reifert Hits Two Home Runs, Drives In 4, Townsend gets 4 hits In 14-2 Camanche Win
CAMANCHE — Wilton senior Evan Reifert had a monster game against the Camanche Indians last Thursday.  There, Reifert was 2-for-3 with two home runs, 4 RBI’s, two walks and a stolen base to lead Wilton to a 14-2 win over their RVC North foe.  Jared Townsend also had a monster game at the plate, going 4-for-4 with 2 RBI’s, 2 stolen bases, two runs scored and a walk.
Wilton collected 18 hits in the game and all but two players had hits.  Colin McCrabb was 3-for-5 as well with two doubles.  Brady Barrett, Jake Lenker, Tyler Hartman and Kaleb Timmsen each had two hits.  Tyler Hartman had 3 RBI’s while Timmsen had 2.
Wilton led 4-0 after three and 7-2 after five innings.  Wilton scored one in the sixth and six in the seventh inning to reach their 14 runs.
Colin McCrabb was the winning pitcher after four innings of work.  He gave up three hits, two runs, walked four and struck out four.  Cory Anderson pitched three innings and gave up two hits, no runs and struck out four.

Beavers Beat Easton Valley 9-3
WILTON — The Wilton Beavers beat Easton Valley at home last Friday to end a busy week on Friday, June 9.  There the Beavers used a 7-run fourth inning to take control of the game.  Easton Valley led 2-0 after one inning and 3-0 after the top of the third.  Wilton scored their first run in the bottom of the third to trim the RiverHawk lead to 3-1.  Wilton led 8-3 after the fourth and added a single run in the fifth for a 9-3 lead.
Nolan Leaton was the winning pitcher after four innings of work.  He struck out two and gave up three runs on three hits.  Jared Townsend pitched two innings and Matt Paustian one-inning in relief.  The Beavers struck out nine Easton Valley batters.

Seven different Beavers had hits in the game.  Evan Reifert had a double and 3 RBI’s, Tyler Hartman had a hit and 2 RBI’s and Jared Townsend and Colin McCrabb each had hits and a RBI.  Wilton drew seven walks and stole five bases in the game.  Wilton improved to 5-1 in non-conference games this year with the win.
