DAVENPORT — The Durant baseball team is off to a 4-0 start to the new season thanks to a 4-game win streak to start the 2017 season. The Wildcats are averaging seven runs a game in their first four games to aid the streak. The 28 runs, 7.0-runs per game average, and 4-0 start to the sea- son is the best marks for the Wildcats in the four-short years of River Valley Conference play.
The Wildcats swept West Branch to open the 2017 season on May 25 and followed that with a non- conference doubleheader sweep over Davenport North by scores of 6-2 and 6-3. Those wins gave the Wildcats their best start through four games in the four years of the RVC.

In game one at Davenport North, Durant used three pitchers to combine on a two-hitter. Curtis Lilienthal was the winning pitcher after working 2 2/3 innings. He gave up one-hit and no runs. He struck out four North batters. Reece Bird pitched next and worked the next 2 1/3 innings. He struck out three and gave up one-hit and no runs. Colin Weih worked the final two innings, giving up two runs, while walking five and striking out five. It was Weih’s first appearance of the season.
Durant scored three runs in the top of the second for a 3-0 lead which was enough. The Wildcats added one run in the third and two in the fifth to take a 6-0 lead.
Mason Compton and Bryce Lafrenz each had two hits. Lafrenz’s hits were doubles and Comp-
ton had 1 double. Durant as a team had four doubles in the game. Leo Callison, Reece Bird, Luke Whitlock and Cole Miedema each had hits. Whitlock had 2 RBI’s and Miedema and Curtis Lilienthal each had 1 RBI.

Game two was similar in that Durant scored first and held its lead, but each team scored three runs in the sixth inning to make things interesting. Durant led 3-0 after five innings and 6-0 after scoring three runs in the top of the sixth. North scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth to cut the Wild- cat lead in half, but could get no closer.
Brendan paper was the winning pitcher for Durant. The freshman hurler worked five innings and pitched into the sixth inning in his season debut and gave up two runs on three hits. He walked six and struck out five. Luke Whitlock and Lafrenz each pitched in relief and combined to work the sixth and seventh innings.
Durant had six hits in the game led by Conley who was 2-for-3 with 4 stolen bases, 2 RBI’s and two runs scored. Mason Compton, Leo Callison, Bryce Lafrenz and Cole Miedema each had hits.

Wildcats Give 7th ranked Cascade Quite A Game
CASCADE — The Durant Wildcats gave the 7th ranked Cascade Cougars quite a game last Thursday at Cascade, but suffered their first loss of the season, a 5-1 defeat. The Cougars won their second straight RVC contest after losing their first on May 25 to NE Goose Lake. The win was the second straight over a RVC South foe.
Wildcat lead-off batter Jake Conley had three of the seven Durant hits in the game. Conley hit safely in all three at-bats, stole two bases, reached base via a walk and scored the Wildcats only run. Mason Compton, Leo Callison, Colin Weih and Cole Miedema had the other hits.
Reece Bird started and pitched three innings for Durant. He had good control in the game, having walked no Cascade batters. He struck out four, scattered four hits and gave up all three runs in the third inning.
Gannon O’Brien was the winning pitcher, having thrown 103 pitches over 6 1/3 innings. He struck out five, walked three and gave up one-run. Dilan Simon was 2-for-3 with two runs scored to lead Cascade.
Curtis Lilienthal pitched three innings in relief and gave up two runs on three hits. He struck out three and walked two.
Durant scored the game’s first run in the top of the third, but a three-run inning by Cascade in the bottom of the inning gave Cascade a 3-1 lead, one they would not give up. The Cougars added two runs in the bottom of the fifth to stretch their lead to 5-1, which would be the final score.
