Knights Win Two At Springville Tournament


SPRINGVILLE — The North Cedar softball team won their third and fourth games of the season, winning both games at the Springville Tournament Saturday, June 10.  There, the Knights beat the host Orioles 6-3 and then took a 9-5 win over Central Elkader.
Alyssa Barnhart was the winning pitcher in a 6-3 win over Springville.  Barnhart struck out seven, pitched six innings, scattered three hits and gave up three runs.  North Cedar had six hits by five different players.  Anna Petersen was 2-for-3 with a double and RBI.  Morgan Sander had a single and 2 RBI’s.  Barnhart, Katie Thompson and Sam Koth each had hits.  Kassidie Galloway had a RBI.  Thompson had two of the Knights five stolen bases as a team.  North Cedar broke a 1-1 game with a four-run top of the second to take a 5-1 lead.  North Cedar led 6-2 after three innings.
In the Central Elkader win, North Cedar scored nine runs on five hits and drew seven walks in the victory.  North Cedar trailed 2-1 after three innings, but dropped seven runs on their opponents in the top of the fourth inning to take an 8-2 lead.  North Cedar would lead 9-2 at one point.
Barnhart was the winning pitcher after five innings of play where she struck out nine batters and gave up five runs.  Morgan Sander had a double, two runs scored, 3 RBI’s, a stolen base and a walk.  Anna Petersen, Katie Thompson and Jasmine Ruggiero each had a hit and RBI.  Petersen and Ruggiero each had doubles.  Taylor Tenley also had a RBI in the game.
North Cedar improved to 4-12 and have won two in a row and three of their last eight games.

Tri-Rivers Teams Too Much For Knights
WHEATLAND — The North Cedar Knight baseball team fell twice to Tri-Rivers schools last Saturday at the Calamus-Wheatland Tournament.  There, North Cedar lost 13-3 to the host Warriors and 3-0 to Midland.
The Knights lost their opening game to class 1A #14 Calamus-Wheatland 13-3 in five innings.  A seven-run fifth gave the Warriors enough to end the game on the 10-run mercy rule.  Cal-Wheat led 4-1 before the Knights scored the next three to trim their lead to 4-3.
North Cedar had five hits in the game led by Austyn Sander who was 2-for-3 with 2 RBI’s.  Aaron Woodward, Byron Boleyn and Devin Willis had had singles.  Willis had a RBI.  Boleyn took the loss after 1 2/3 innings.  He gave up four runs on one-hit and walked two.  Tyler Thurston, Devin Willis and Alex Woodward all pitched in relief.  Thurston pitched two innings and gave up one-run.
Against Midland, a three-run second was the difference in a 3-0 Eagles win.  Carter Johnson took the loss, struck out two and walked no batters in six innings.  Jacob Jensen had the only hit for North Cedar a single.  Devin Willis, Tyler Thurston and Byron Boleyn each walked to reach base.
Midland moved to 10-3 after Saturday’s games.  The Eagles lost to Camanche and that was their first loss in five games.  North Cedar fell to 2-12 overall with the losses.

Tough Night For North Cedar In Monticello Games

LOWDEN — The North Cedar baseball and softball teams were swept at home by Monticello.  The Knight softball team lost game one 9-1 and game two 9-8.  It was the second of three RVC North doubleheaders they have lost.  North Cedar split two games with Bellevue on May 25.
The North Cedar baseball team lost game one 12-2 in five innings and game two, 4-1.  In game one, North Cedar trailed 9-0 before scoring twice in the bottom of the fourth to set the score at 9-2.  Monticello extended their lead to 12-2 with a three-run fifth.
Aaron Woodward was the losing pitcher after two innings of work.  He gave up one run on two hits and struck out three.  Tyler Thurston, Alex Woodward and Devin Willis each pitched in relief.
North Cedar had three hits in the game.  Woodward was 2-for-2 with two doubles and a run scored.  Byron Boleyn had a single.
In game two, North Cedar lost 4-1 after trailing 2-1 after the first inning.  Ethan Sahr took the loss after three innings of work.  He struck out three, walked none and gave up three runs on three hits.
North Cedar had six hits in the game led by Jacob Jensen and Byron Boleyn each with two hits.  Boleyn drove in the Knights only run and also reached base by a walk.
Alyssa Barnhart took the loss a 9-1 game one loss.  The Panthers scored five of their nine runs in the first inning.  North Cedar had two hits, a Barnhart double and a Katie Thompson single.  Hannah Bachman had the only RBI.  Morgan Sander walked twice and Kayla Syring and Jasmine Ruggiero each had one walk.
In game two, North Cedar fought back from a 5-0 deficit with a three-run third inning to set the score at 5-4.  The rest of the game was a dogfight.  North Cedar trailed 9-7 going to the bottom of the seventh, but only pushed one-run across the plate to fall 9-8.

Barnhart was the tough luck losing pitcher.  Barnhart gave up 12 hits and nine runs over seven innings.  She was 3-for-4 with a double, stolen base and two runs scored at the plate.  Anna Peterson and Kassidie Galloway each had two hits.  Petersen, Galloway, Kayla Syring and Taylor Tenley each had RBI’s.  North Cedar had 10 hits in the game.
