TIPTON — The Tipton softball team played two conference games last week, both against River Valley Conference North foes. Tipton traveled to Goose Lake last Tuesday and hosted Bellevue last Thursday. In the two games, Tipton played well, but came up short, losing both games. Tipton fell 4-3 to Northeast and 7-0 to Bellevue.
Tipton struggled to solve Bellevue starter Grace Tath. Tath did not allow a Tipton hit until the bottom of the seventh on an Allie Ryan double. Ashley Mente reached base next, but the Tigers could not score any runs in the 7-0 loss. The Comets led 1-0 until the top of the seventh when they scored six runs.
Morgan Wendel took the loss after working seven innings. Wendel gave up seven runs and struck out three batters.
Bellevue avoided losing back-to-back games with the win. The Comets dropped a 12-2 home game to state-ranked Iowa City Regina two days before their game with the Tigers. Bellevue won their first three games to start the season.
Grace Tath was the winning pitcher after working seven innings and allowing one hit. She struck out one and walked no Tiger batters. Eliza Scheckel, Ashley Nemmers, Alyssa Rubel and Molly Urbain all had two hits in the game. Scheckel had a home run while Lindsey Banowetz had a double and two RBI’s. Eight different Comes had hits in the game.
Tigers Fall To Northeast On The Road
GOOSE LAKE — Tipton made the long trek to Goose Lake last Tuesday, to play the Rebels from the Northeast. There, the Tigers fell 4-3 in a tough game. The Tigers led 3-2 going to the bottom of the seventh inning. There, the Rebels pushed across two runs to walk-off with a one-run win. Tipton scored the game's first runs in the top of the first with a single run. The Tigers led 2-0 after a single run in the top of the fifth. Northeast tied the game with a two-run fifth in the bottom of the inning.
The closeness of the game was a win for the Tigers. The Tigers have been outscored 80 to 19 in their last six games against the Rebels, dating back to the 2014 season when the RVC was in its first year. None of those games were closer than a six-run margin and all six saw the Rebels score in double digits.
The Tigers had six hits in the game by four different players. Laken Hermiston was 3-for-4 with a double. Hailey Stewart, Ashley Mente, and Morgan Wendel all had hits in the game and each had an RBI too.
Wendel took the loss after working a complete game, seven-inning effort. She struck out four and walked one batter. She gave up four runs.
Alexis Ehlers was the winning pitcher for Northeast after going seven innings. She struck out five and walked three. Cassidy DonDiego led Rebel batters, going 4-for-4 with 2 RBI’s. Bree Mangelsen added two hits and an RBI.
The annual Tipton softball tournament was canceled due to the potential of storms moving through the area last Saturday. The Tigers have a busy week ahead, playing four games in a four-day stretch. The Tigers hosted Mid-Prairie on Monday night and Camanche came to town on Tuesday, June 5. The Tigers will travel to Monticello non-Thursday, June 7.
