DURANT — The Durant Wildcats ended a busy six-game week with a tough three-game stretch against three ranked teams, all at home. The Wildcats played class 5A No. 3 Dubuque Hempstead Friday before welcoming class 2A No. 11 Louisa-Muscatine and Class 1A No. 15 New London for a weekend tournament last Saturday.

The Wildcats started their run of three games in a two-day period last Friday, welcoming in class 5A No. 3 Dubuque Hempstead. There, the Wildcats outlasted their opponents with a

Durant took an early 2-0 lead with single runs in the bottom of the first and second innings. A Hannah Happ RBI single in the first and a run scoring on an error in the second gave Durant the early 2-0 lead.

Hempstead scored one run in the fourth and tied the game at 2-2 with a run in the sixth. Durant could not get the winning run home in the bottom of the sixth despite getting a runner to third base. Durant went in order in the bottom of the seventh, sending the game to extra innings.

Hempstead put some pressure on the Wildcats, getting the bases loaded in the top of the eighth and getting a runner to second in the top of the ninth.

Ally Happ tried to start a two-out rally in the eighth with a single. She stole second base to get into scoring position but would be left stranded. In the bottom of the ninth, Durant broke through. Hannah Happ led off the ninth with a single. She went to second on a single by Kamryn Meyer and advanced to third on an error. Happ would score on a squeeze bunt play by Kira Schult that scored Happ with the winning run.

Kamryn Meyer was the winning pitcher in the game after nine innings of work. She struck out eight and walked two batters. She gave up seven hits and two runs, one earned. Dubuque Hempstead entered the game with a team batting average of .317 and was held to seven hits in the game. Durant did a good job of keeping 2017 All-State selection Alana Cooksley down. Cookley came into the game batting .457 with 14 RBI’s and was 0-for-3 in the game.

Durant had 11 hits in the game. Dubuque Hempstead entered the game with a team ERA of 1.90. Durant was led by Kira Schult who was 3-for-4 with 2 RBI’s. Hannah Happ, Kamryn Meyer each had two hits while Ruby Kappeler, Jalyn Bullard, Jada Rock, and Ally Happ all had hits.

Wildcats Lose For First Time In 2018
DURANT — The Durant Wildcats hosted the first of two home tournaments this season last Saturday. The field was stacked with two other ranked opponents other than the Wildcats who came into the tournament ranked No. 1 in Class 2A. There, Durant played two games and split the games with two ranked teams. Durant beat Class 2A No. 11 Louisa-Muscatine 5-2 and lost 9-3 to Class 1A No. 15 New London. The loss was the first for Durant who saw their record go to 6-1.

In the first of two games, Durant beat the 11th ranked team in Class 2A 5-2. Kamryn Meyer scattered six hits over seven innings to get the win. She gave up two runs, one earned, and struck out four and walked three batters.

Durant had eight hits with Ruby Kappeler and Kira Schult each having two hits. Kappeler had two doubled and Mallory Warner had 2 RBI’s.

The Wildcats led 2-0 after the second inning, but Louisa-Muscatine tied the game at 2 in the fourth. Durant answered with three runs in the bottom of the fifth to put the margin at 5-2, which would be the final score.

Coming off of two hard-fought games and a long week, the Wildcats faced New London in the second game. There, the Wildcats suffered their first loss of the season, 9-3. New London led 4-0 after four innings. Durant rallied, scoring single runs in the fifth and sixth innings to trim the New London lead to 4-2 after six innings.

New London then put the game out of reach, with a five-run top of the seventh, to take a 9-2 lead. Durant did put up a run in the seventh, but it was not enough.

Jenna Lawson took the loss after seven innings of work. She gave up ten hits and nine runs. Only four of those runs were earned, however. Lawson struck out four and walked three.

Durant had 12 hits in the game with five players getting multiple hits. Hannah Happ, Kamryn Meyer, Mallory Warner, Paige Werthmann and Ally Happ all had two hits. Durant hit two home runs in the game, one each for Ruby Kappeler and Warner.
