CEDAR RAPIDS — The Tipton baseball team could not come up with a timely hit against Davenport North last Friday in a non-conference game in Cedar Rapids. The ball game was moved to Mt. Mercy University after poor field conditions in Tipton due to heavy rain most of last week. The matchup was supposed to be a varsity doubleheader, but due to the logistical changes, only one game was played.
There, North scored a 5-0 win to improve to 8-11. The win snapped a brief two-game losing streak. North defeated their second RVC South school with the win after beating Durant in late May 20-9 and 8-1. Wilton beat North, 14-7 on June 12. The Tigers fell to 6-11 overall and 1-5 in non-conference games this year. The Tigers still have non-conference games this week with Lone Tree Wednesday at home and with Calamus-Wheatland at home on July 5.
Davenport North scored first with a single run in the top of the first inning. The Wildcats extended their lead to 3-0 with a two-run third, and took command of the game with a two-run fifth to put the score at 5-0.
Tipton left four batters in scoring position in the game, and could not get a key hit to plate runs. Tipton had runners at second and third in the first inning but could not plate a run. Trent Pelzer singled and moved to second on Logan Hoffman’s single. Both moved up on a ground out by Luke Becker giving Tipton two runners in scoring position with two outs. North got out of the jam by getting Kael Jauron to fly out to end the inning.
Nile Schuett smacked a one-out double in the second inning but was stranded there and Kael Jauron advanced to third base in the fourth inning but was left stranded as well.
Luke Becker took the loss and fell to 2-4 in six starts this season. He topped the 30-inning mark for the season in the game. Becker threw 5 1/3 innings and gave up five runs, three earned, on nine hits. He struck out two and walked three batters. Cole Syring pitched the final 1 2/3 innings in relief. He didn’t allow a run and gave up two hits.
Blake Stoughton was the winning pitcher after working a complete game for the Wildcats. He struck out four, walked none and gave up eight hits.
Tipton had two players with multi-hit games. They were Trent Pelzer, and Nile Schuett as all had two hits. Schuett had a double and collected the only extra base hit for the Tigers. Dylan Mente, Logan Hoffman and Kael Jauron each had hits in the game.
North had three players with multi-hit games. Jared Beck was 3-for-4 with a double, RBI and two runs scored. Bryan Verdon and Cody DePardo each had two hits. The Wildcats 3-6 hitters each drove in one-run.

SOLON — The Tipton baseball team had a rough road trip last Monday, June 18 in their trip to class 3A No. 6 Solon. There, the Spartans scored 11 runs in the bottom of the third inning to break open a 6-2 game and take a 20-3 non-conference contest in four innings.
