TIPTON — The Tipton Tigers will be repre-
sented by six events at this week’s Class 2A state
meet in Des Moines. Five of those events were
automatic quali ers after placing rst of second
in their respective meets.
“The kids have been improving each meet. To perform at the meet, it is a testament to them buying in, them putting in the work, and them seeing that they get the results they want,” said Tipton head coach Mike Wehde.
Camanche won the meet with a team score of 123 points. Tipton was the runner-up at the meet with a team score of 106 points. The two teams were the only ones to top the 100-point mark at the 12-team meet. Wapello placed third with 95 points.
Wehde said that the River Valley Conference will have a lot of representation at the state meet.
“It will be like another conference meet. It will take out some of the nerves of a state meet I think when you look around and see relays and individuals that you have competed against most of the year. If you compete against high level competition like we do in the RVC, it only will help when we get to a state qualifying meet like this, or at the state meet,” he said.
Tipton won four events at the meet and placed 2nd in another. Andrew Stewart quali ed for state after placing second in the high jump with a best jump of 6-feet, no inches. Trent Pelzer won the 800-meter run in a season best time of 2:01.91. Frank Bierman and Paden Zell were 1-2 in the 110-meter high hurdles. Bierman won the event in a season-best time of 15.25 while Zell was the runner-up in a time of 15.70. Caleb Shumaker collected two state bids. The sopho- more distance runner won the 3,200-meter run in 10:18.34 and was the runner-up in the 1,600- meter run in a time of 4:43.51.
The Tigers had three relay events qualify for the state meet. The Tigers 4X800-meter relay team of Trent Pelzer, Cody Bohlman, Noah Jedlicka, and Andrew Olseen won the event in a time of 8:31.27. The Tigers shuttle hurdle relay team of Paden Zell, Davis Butler, Payten Elijah, and Frank Bierman were runners-up in the event in a season best time of 1:01.10.
Also qualifying for the state meet is the Tigers 4X400-meter relay team. The team of Andrew Stewart, Connor Hermiston, Frank Bierman, and Trent Pelzer placed 4th in the event in a season-best time of 3:33.30.
Six THS events turned in season best times with three relay events among the six. Markus Rosenkranz placed 18th in the 100-meter dash in 13.06. Connor Hermiston placed 6th in the 200-meter dash in 24.29. Ben Ellis rounded out the individual season-best results with a 4th place nish in the 3,200-meter run in a time of 10:29.60.
In relays, Tipton’s 4X100-meter relay team of John Stroup, Davis Butler, Payten Elijah, and Paden Zell were 6th in 48.09. The Tigers 4X200-meter relay team of Stroup, Elijah, Ka- leb Nerem, and Brandon Valet placed 5th in 1:39.25. The Tiger’s distance medley relay team of Hermiston, Bierman, Stewart and Shumaker were 4th in a time of 3:46.82.
Pair of Knights Headed To State
Two North Cedar athletes will get an opportu- nity to compete at the 2019 Class 2A State Meet this week in Des Moines. The Knights had two state quali ers. They are Caden Wendt and Kael Unruh.
Wendt placed second in the shot put with a best throw of 53-feet, 2 inches. That throw is a season best for him. Unruh earned one of eight wildcard spots given to the last eight best n- ishes statewide in events. Unruh placed 4th in the long jump with a best jump of 20-feet, 10 inches.
North Cedar had several events record season- best times. Kael Unruh placed 4th in the long jump with a best jump of 20-feet, 10-inches. Davonte Crist placed 19th in the 100-meter dash in 13.39. Two Knights had season-best times in the 200-meter dash. Unruh places 7th in 24.59 and Jacob Wagner placed 18th in the same event in 26.85. Gage Walshire had a season-best time in the 110-meter high hurdles in 18.56. Jaxon Sander placed 8th in the 400- meter hurdles in 1:02.53.
The Knights had two relay teams turn in sea- son best times. The Knights 4x200-meter re- lay team of Chance Cinkovich, Evan Patterson, Jaxon Sander, and Unruh placed 7th in 1:40.77. The Knights distance medley relay team of Jacob Wagner, Evan Patterson, Chance Cink- ovich, and Jacob Spahr placed 7th in a season- best time of 4:15.56.
North Cedar placed 10th in the team race with 26 team points.
Willkomm Goes To State In Three Events
Durant’s Jake Willkomm will go to state this week in Des Moines. He won the long jump to go to state, and also jumped to a best jump of 21-feet, 1.75 inches to win the event. Willkomm will also go to state in the 200-meter dash. Willkomm was the runner-up in the event, run- ning to a nish of 23.02, a season-best time. Willkomm was also on the Wildcats 4X400- meter relay team that will go to state, qualifying for one of the eight wildcat spots in the event, after having one of the next eight-best times statewide. The relay team of Willkomm, Jer- emy Carnes, Jack Voss, and Bryce Pracht placed third in the event in a time of 3:32.17.
Senior Mason Compton also will advance to state. Compton was the runner-up to Willkomm in the long jump, jumping to a season-best jump of 20-feet, 11.50 inches.

Hein Punches Ticket To State Meet
Wilton’s Zach Hein captured the runner-up spot in the 3,200-meter run at last week’s state qualifying meet at Tipton. Hein ran to a run- ner-up nish in the event in a time of 10:20.57. That time was a season-best time.
Several Beavers claimed season best times at the meet. Silas Harris placed 21st in a sea- son-best time of 14.21. Two Beavers claimed season-best times in the 200-meter dash. Lu- cas Dora placed 16th in 26.23 and Gabe Paetz placed 20th in 28.70. Ethan Bailey had a sea- son-best time in the 800-meter run in 2:16.99. Isaac Hunter was 14th in the 1,600-meter run in a season-best time of 5:20.45. The Beavers also placed 5th in the shuttle hurdle relay in a season-best time of 1:12.86 with the team of Scott Martin, Abram Jirak, Cody McDonald, and Jacob Reifert.
Wilton placed 11th with 19 team points at the meet.
