2018 will go down as a season to remember for Tigers

  TIPTON — It was quite a season for the Tipton swimming team in 2018. By the numbers, is the best season in quite some time. The Tigers won nine meets this season and were 9-1 in dual meets. In the regular season, Tipton won 77 total events this season. Tipton won ten or more events in four of their meets this season and won nine events in two other meets. Two school records were broken and two events qualified for the state swimming meet for the first time since 2008. All of the state qualifiers will return in 2019.
  “All of these kids at state are back and it will push us next year. Now we have a different goal to start out the season and something better to work for. I am so proud of them for what they did today and all season long. To be here and end the season here is special,” said Tipton swimming coach Whitney Gehrs.
  The Tigers sent two events to the state meet this season, their 200-yard medley relay and their 200-yard freestyle relay. State swimmers were juniors Ali Anderson and Britney Ford, sophomores Zoe Stonebraker and Maddie Swick, and freshman Rhyan Hoefler. The medley relay team broke the school record in the event, set in 2007.
  Tipton had three individual events and their 400-yard freestyle relay in the ballpark of qualifying for the state meet this year.
  Tipton junior Britney Ford was unbeaten in the 100-yard breaststroke in ten dual meets this season. Her first win at Clinton on August 23 was in 1:15.62. Her win at the halfway point of the season was at Fairfield on September 24 in a time of 1:16.86. Her winning time in her last regular season meet was in 1:15.46 at home against Fairfield. Ford swam to a season-best time of 1:12.59 at the Linn-Mar Regional Meet and placed 7th. The last state qualifier this season was junior Maddie Gannon from Cedar Rapids Kennedy in a time of 1:11.01.
  Sophomore Maddie Swick won the 100-yard butterfly four times this year during the regular season and was the runner-up in the event three times. Her first win on August 23 at Clinton was in 1:06.02. Her win near the halfway point of the season at home against Davenport North on September 27 was in 1:04.23, her best time of the season. The last 100-yard butterfly state qualifying time was 1:01.36 from Joclyn Tracy a sophomore from West Des Moines Valley.
  Tipton freshman Rhyan Hoefler, who is a North Cedar student that swims with the Tigers, made an impact in her first year on the team. Hoefler won the 500-yard freestyle in her first varsity meet on August 23 in Clinton, breaking the school record in the 500-yard freestyle. She won the event in a time of 5:34.15, breaking the previous record set in 1983 by Jill Maher.
  The Tigers 400-yard freestyle relay team of Rhyan Hoefler, Ali Anderson, Maddie Swick, and Zoe Stonebraker will all be back next year. The Tigers won the 400-yard freestyle relay in eight of their regular season meets. The relay swam to a season-best time of 3:54.58 at the Linn-Mar Regional Meet on October 27. The last 400-yard freestyle relay that qualified for the state meet this year was from Marshalltown who swam to a Regional Meet time of 3:54.10.
  Tipton will say goodbye to there only senior this year, Artica Dykstra. Her best individual times this year were: 50-free 29.17; 100-free 1:06.76; 200-free 2:28.17; 500-free 6:38.94; 100-backstroke 1:17.36; 100-breaststroke 1:28.37; and 100-butterfly 1:18.60. Dykstra won two events this season. She won the 200-yard freestyle at the Tigers home meet on September 27 against Davenport and she won the 500-yard freestyle at the Tigers home meet on October 15 against Fairfield. She also collected five runner-up event finishes and five third place event finishes.
  Tipton will return all five swimmers that competed at state next year in juniors Ali Anderson and Britney Ford, sophomores Zoe Stonebraker and Maddie Swick, and freshman Rhyan Hoefler. Also back will be junior Sara Webb and sophomores Liz Bierman and Kayley Clark. The Tigers biggest class for swimmers this season were their freshman group of six. Joining Hoefler will be Alicia Beranek, Mayle Brooks, Sabra Rogers, Hannah Tucker, and Corrine Vandergaast.
