CEDAR RAPIDS — Carrying the RVC South banner and 36 match wins this year to the 2018 state tournament, the Wilton Beavers were armed with a lot of confidence. Wilton advanced to the state tournament with a 3-1 win over No. 1 Grundy Center in the Regional Final. Their reward, No. 2 Dyersville-Beckman, and top-seed in the Class 2A field of eight. Beckman, who played in the 2017 state tournament in class 3A. The Blazers lost in last seasons quarterfinals to 2017 Class 3A champ Waterloo Columbus.

Against the Blazers, Wilton lost 3-0 to end their fine season.

“We seemed to be on our heels a little bit,” Wilton coach Brenda Grunder said. “We got out there, 18-13, and we just couldn’t get our offense running, and that’s certainly a great compliment to Beckman.”

Beckman played well at the net, limiting Wilton kill attempts and when they did get through blocks, digging them up.

“Their approach is explosive, and their swings are fast. I just felt we weren’t quite ready for that tempo, which we should have been because we’ve played a lot of good teams this season,” said Grunder.

Wilton reached the state tournament after upsetting top-ranked Grundy Center 3-1 at Cedar Rapids Xavier on Tuesday, October 30. The Beavers won a pair of home matches in the Regional tournament to get to the Regional final against RVC South foes Iowa City Regina and West Branch.

Wilton led 18-13 in the first set, but could not hold their lead, falling 25-22 after a 12-4 Beckman run to close the set. Beckman took a 2-0 match lead, winning the second set 25-13. Wilton fought hard in the final set, before falling 25-17 to end the match 3-0.

Putman led the Beavers with nine kills had 10 digs, and freshman Kelsey Drake added eight kills and 11 digs. Freshman setter Ella Caffery had 26 assists.

The Beavers end the season 36-5, setting a new school record. Senior Aubrey Putman finished her career with 1,598 kills and was second in Class 2A this season with 457 kills. Freshman Ella Caffrey

finished sixth in Class 2A this season with 804 assists. Wilton will say goodbye to seniors Eleney Owens, Kortney Drake, Becca Ball, Emily Lange, and Putman. While at Wilton the seniors were a part of 120 wins and 43 losses. The past two seasons Wilton has a record of 70 wins against 11 losses. Wilton had won at least 30 matches each of the past three seasons and have played in Regional Final matches each of the past two seasons. Wilton set school records for fewest losses in a season (4), most consecutive wins (20) and fewer set losses in a season (20) as well this year.

“I think they have to be so proud when they step away from this moment and look at the big picture of their careers,” Grunder said of her seniors. “They have certainly left a legacy,” said Grunder.

Beckman was led by two 2017 All-State players in seniors Sydney Steffen and Isabelle Bennett. Bennett led the Blazers in kills with 15 in 37 attacks, had 8 digs and served 7-for-8. Steffen led Beckman in serving, going 24-for-24 with 3 aces and assists with 40 in the match. Beckman entered the tournament with the most kills in the state.

Beckman advanced to the state tournament with home wins against Maquoketa Valley and Cascade 3-0 before beating No. 12 Durant 3-0 in a Regional Final match at Anamosa.
