DES MOINES — Two Conservative area volleyball players were named to the Iowa Girls Coaches Association’s Class 2A All-State list Tuesday. Wilton senior Aubrey Putman and Durant senior Kamryn Meyer were those selections. Putman earned All-State honors for the second year in a row.
“It means a lot. Especially with me growing as a player each year as we grew as a team. To be able to do this back to back years is a really big honor and I am happy to be able to get it,” said Putman.
“It is a cool thing to add to this year. Going to state with my team is my overall highlight for the year, but for my career, it is pretty cool to add on and to be able to say I was All-State two of my four years is special.
Putman had the second most kills in Class 2A with 457. Also had a team high 277 digs, 43 blocks as well as 54 aces on the season. Putman leaves Wilton with 1,598 career kills, which are a Wilton school record. She finishes her career as a double-1,000 player. She finished her career with 1,297 career digs. Putman helped lead the Beavers to the 2018 state tournament after Wilton upset top-ranked Grundy Center in the Regional Final round. It was the first trip to state in volleyball since 2004 for the program.
“I have seen very good volleyball players, but not have the team with them. I do believe that it takes a team to make these things happen. I think it is a difficult accomplishment to achieve. I have seen players that I thought surely would be on an All-State team, not make it,” said Wilton volleyball coach Brenda Grunder.
Grunder said that this season was a special one. Wilton won 36 matches, a school record, and compiled a two-year record of 70-11.
“They liked being teammates. It’s every coaches goal. This unity. You hope it happens, but you don’t know. Sometimes there are just too many uncontrollables. This team reached this dynamic. What I will remember about Aubrey is that very early on she had a tenacious focus in practice. She learned early on to embrace those leadership responsibilities,” she said.
Durant senior Kamryn Meyer was also recognized as a third-team selection. Meyer led the Wildcats with 259 kills this season. She also added 177 digs, 60 blocks, and 33 aces while leading Durant to an appearance in the regional championship. The Wildcats finished the season 26-9 under first-year coach Mark Lau.
