CEDAR RAPIDS — The Tipton Tiger volleyball team earned a trip to the Class 3A Final Four with a 3-1 quarterfinal match win over No. 13 New Hampton last week at the state volleyball tournament. The Tigers won their 38th match of the season. Tipton won the first set 25-22, lost the second set 25-17 and won the third set 25-23 and fourth set 25-19 to win the match 3-1.
“The one thing I was excited about was to hear them say, 'Tipton Tigers, your team will be playing in the semifinals. We didn’t want to settle for the semifinals, either. We want to keep on rolling.” said Tipton volleyball coach Amy Calonder.
Tipton won the first set to take a 1-0 match lead. Five Tigers had at least one kill in the set. They were Sommer Daniel, Kamryn Chapman, Emily Hermsen, Jamie Kofron, and Amanda Smith. Amanda Smith had nine assists in the first set. New Hampton was the first to 10 points, but Tipton was the first to 15 and 20 points in the set. Neither team got more than a two-point lead until the Tigers led 17-14 after a Sommer Daniel kill. The match was tied at 19-19 when Ehler got a kill to give Tipton a 20-19 lead. Tipton trailed 21-20 before an Ehler kill tied the set at 21. Madison O’Leary had an ace serve to give Tipton a 22-21 lead and a New Hampton hit error set the score at 23-21. Tipton would take the set 25-23 after a double block by Daniel and Kofron to secure the set.
In the second set, Tipton fell 25-17. New Hampton led 5-1 and 9-2 at one point. Tipton got within three points, 11-8 after the second of back-to-back Sommer Daniel aces. New Hampton would use a 7-2 run to take an 18-10 lead. The Chickasaws were the first team to 20 points, 20-13 and outscored the Tigers 5-4 down the stretch to claim the set.
Tipton won the third set, 25-23. New Hampton was the first team to 10, 15 and 20 points in the set. Tipton fought the whole set and captured a 2-1 match lead with the win. Tipton led 1-0 on a Jamie Kofron kill, 2-1 on a Sommer Daniel Kill and 3-2 on a Kamryn Chapman kill. New Hampton would grab this lead moments later, breaking a 3-3 score with a point off of a Tipton hitting error. The Chickasaws would led most of the set and grabbed their biggest lead, four points, at 17-11. Tipton fought to get the score to three points, 18-15, but New Hampton took a 22-16 lead later, tilting the momentum their way. The Tigers, however, didn’t stop and rallied. A big dig by Karlee Kamberling set up a New Hampton kill error to make the score 22-17. Blake Ehler served the Tigers to 22-20 with another Chickasaw error and an Amanda Smith kill.
Tipton trailed 23-20 but five straight points gave Tipton the set 25-23 behind a 9-1 run of the point to close the set. A Daniel kill, a Smith ace serve, A Kofron kill and another New Hampton error gave Tipton the final points of the set.

The set was tied at 5, 7, an 8 but a Daniel kill gave Tipton an 8-7 lead and another Daniel kill gave Tipton a 9-8 lead. Tipton extended their lead to 11-8 and led by four, 15-11 to get to 15 first in the set. The Tigers also got to 20 first while taking a 20-14 lead. The Tigers led by their biggest margin, seven points, 22-15 before New Hampton made one last comeback attempt. New Hampton scored four straight points to cut Tipton’s lead to 22-19. Madison O’Leary would serve the final two points to give Tipton a 25-22 win.
Tipton had reached their second straight state tournament with Regional wins over Mid-Prairie and Williamsburg at home before beating Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont in Grinnell. The Tigers did not lose a set in the Regional tournament. The win was the Tigers 11th straight.
Neither team hit the ball well in the match. The Tigers had a kill efficiency of .135 while New Hampton had one of .111. The Tigers had 50 kills and 29 attack errors while New Hampton had 43 kills and 27 errors.
Sommer Daniel led Tipton in kills with 23. Jamie Kofron had 8 kills and Kamryn Chapman had 6. Amanda Smith had 30 assists and Daniel had 13. Daniel and Ehler led Tipton in digs with 18 each. The Tigers came up big at the net in the match, recording 12 blocks as a team. Kamryn Chapman, Daniel, and Kofron each had three blocks to lead THS. The Tigers served 88-for-91 with 7 aces. Kofron served 17-for-17 with an ace while Madison O’Leary served 16-for-17 with two aces, and Amanda Smith served 16-for-16 with an ace. Daniel had three ace serves.
Rachel Rinken had 14 kills for New Hampton and Kiersten Tenge had 11. Lauren Freichs had 35 assists and led four New Hampton players with double-digit dig totals with 17.
The Tigers improved to 38-3 with the win while New Hampton fell to 36-6 to end their season.
