MARION — Ten years is a long time. In November of 2008, President Barak Obama won his first term as the 44th president of the United States. Also, in the news was Tipton’s 2008 successes in cross-country with then-seniors Eric Thein winning the Class 2A boys race and Missy Miller finishing as runner-up in the girl's race. Also that fall, the Tiger swimming program sent five events to the state meet. Tipton hasn’t been back. Until now. Last Saturday, the Tigers qualified two events for the state meet this year, ending a 10-year absence from state competition. The Tigers 200-yard medley relay and their 200-yard freestyle relay will swim at the 2018 state meet this weekend in Marshalltown, Iowa.

“We are so excited,” said Tipton swimming coach Whitney Gehrs.

“I told the girls to leave it all in the pool. We had nothing to lose and everything to gain. They all dropped time and that is what you want at this point of the season,” said Gehrs.

The IGHSAU changed the way that teams can qualify for the state meet this year. The state expanded the entries for the state meet in both individual and relay events. This year the state is taking the top-32 relays in the state, based on their times from Regional qualifying meets.

Tipton’s two state-qualifying relays placed 7th and 8th at the meet Saturday, making a fourth of the state relay entries in the 200-yard medley and the 200-yard freestyle coming out of the Tigers regional meet. The Tigers started off the meet with a fine time in the 200-yard medley relay. The team of Ali Anderson, Britney Ford, Maddie Swick, and Zoe Stonebraker finished 8th in a time of 1:56.08. That time beat their previous best of 2:01 set in late September.

The Tigers 200-yard freestyle relay team of Rhyan Hoefler, Ali Anderson, Maddie Swick, and Zoe Stonebraker placed 8th in a time of 1:45.30. That was better than their previous time of 1:49.02 set two weeks ago.

Before state qualifiers were known, the Tigers jumped from 34th in the medley relay to 19th and jumped from 33rd to 20th in the 200-yard freestyle. Once state qualifiers were known, the Tigers qualified for state 27th in the medley and 31st in the 200-freestyle relay.

Tipton nearly qualified for state their 400-yard freestyle relay. The team of Rhyan Hoefler, Ali Anderson, Madie Swick, and Zoe Stonebraker finished 8th in a time of 3:54.58. Their best time coming into Saturday was 4:02.31. They missed state by less than half a second.

In individual events, Tipton had two, top-10 finishers at the meet. Britney Ford turned in a season-best time in the 100-yard breaststroke and placed 7th in 1:12.59. She was unbeaten in the event in duals this season. Rhyan Hoefler also had a top-10 finish with an 8th place finish in the 200-yard freestyle in 2:07.58.

Other individual results were Hoefler 11th in the 500-yard freestyle, Ali Anderson 13th in the 50-yard freestyle, and Sara Webb placed 14th in the 100-yard backstroke.

The Tigers will turn their attention to Marshalltown now. The Tigers will be a part of the parade of teams at 5:30 Friday at the Marshalltown YMCA. Tipton will swim on Saturday, November 3 in the mid-afternoon. The swimming portion of the state meet begins at 4 p.m. Saturday afternoon.
