WILTON — The Wilton Beavers began their postseason run last Friday with high hopes of reaching the UNI-Dome for the first time. With a shiny 8-1 overall record, a state ranking and no Iowa City Regina in sight, the Beavers liked their chances. Their first-round opponent, Pella Christian, had other ideas though. There, the Eagles defeated the Beavers 31-28 to dash Wilton’s hopes of a lengthy postseason run. Wilton reached the round of eight last season after upsetting Bellevue in Bellevue, before losing to Iowa City Regina in the state quarterfinals. Regina, the roadblock to many teams in years past, did not qualify for the playoffs for the first time in more than a decade.

Wilton did not have the start they wanted to for the football game. A blocked punt led to an Eagle field goal in the first quarter and later in the half another blocked punt would be recovered in the end zone for a touchdown and a 10-0 Pella Christian lead. Wilton would cut into the Eagle lead with 5:59 left in the first half on a Collin McCrabb 10-yard touchdown run to set the score at 10-7.

In the second half, Wilton scored first to take their first lead with 8:16 left in the quarter. Jerome Mays scored on a 4-yard run to set the score at 14-10. The Eagles would retake the lead late in the quarter, 17-14 on a 2-yard touchdown runs by quarterback Dan Jungling.

The Eagles took the steam out of the Beavers, scoring early in the fourth quarter on the first of two, fourth quarter Noah Treimer touchdown runs to set the score at 24-14.

Wilton answered with a Mays touchdown pass to Brock Hartley for 9 yards to get Wilton within 24-20 with 4:41 left in the game. Treimer’s second scoring run with 1:40 left in the game set the score at 31-20. Wilton didn’t quit, moving the football through the air quickly, ending in a 10-yard touchdown pass from Mays to Chantz Stevens to set the score at 31-28. The Beavers tried an onside kick with 0:48 left in the game, but Pella Christian recovered and ran out the clock.

Wilton had 362 yards of total offense with 252 passing yards and 110 rushing yards. Jerome Mays passed for 252 yards and two touchdowns, he also led Wilton in rushing with 73 yards. Cory Anderson was his main target catching 7 passes for 85 yards. Collin McCrabb caught seven passes for 51 yards. McCrabb rushed for 43 yards and a touchdown. Defensively, Durant was led by Brock Hartley with 12 tackles and Anderson with 11.

Wilton will say goodbye to a large senior class. Graduating off of this year’s team are Jerome Mays, Garrett Bohnsack, Chantz Stevens, Ronen Santiago, Brock Hartly, Ashton Stoelk, A.J. Bosten, Cory Anderson, Collin McCrabb, Brian Stillman, Jacob Creamer, Corey Anderson, Charles Marin, Clayton Cooling, Calib Lilly, Jared Townsend, Brayton Wade and Trey Burnett.
