FORT DODGE — Three Cedar County runners competed in the Class 2A girl’s race at the 2018 state cross-country meet in Fort Dodge. They were Tipton sophomore Kallie Wallick, North Cedar senior Carly Montz and North Cedar sophomore Kiley Chapman. Wallick would finish the highest of the trio of runners, claiming a spot in the top-15 finishers to earn All-State honors. Wallick finished 14th overall in a season-best time of 20:04.

Wallick said she was nervous early, but got settled into the race.

“When I started, I was super nervous and freaking out. But when I got into the race, the race started becoming a lot easier and I was able to surge when I got into a comfortable pace and that is what kept me going,” she said.

“I kept remembering my goal of wanting to get in the top-15,” said Wallick.

Wallick reached the state meet by finishing in the top-15 at the Tipton state qualifying meet last week. There, she placed 9th overall.

“This is like a dream, honestly,” Wallick said. “I just wanted to do this for my team and my community. Getting in that top 15 and making them proud was a big thing for me.”

Saturday, Wallick ran a good race and was near the lead pack the whole race. She would finish the race 14th overall in a time of 20:04. That time, set a new personal record for her this season.

“Kallie took off fast and ran her race. She ran her heart out. For being on the deck and being in the top-15 after not qualifying last year as a heartache, it just shows how she turned her season around with dedication, hard work, and perseverance,” said Tipton cross-country coach Eric Walsh.

Montz capped off a good running career at North Cedar with her second straight state trip. She finished 12 spots ahead of her finish last year and ran a faster race. In 2017, Montz placed 84th, in 2018, she placed 72nd. In 2017, Montz finished the race in a time of 21:58. In 2018, she finished faster, in a time of 21:47. North Cedar also had sophomore Kiley Chapman running at the meet. Chapman gave the Knights their best finish at the meet, running to a 43rd overall place finish in 21:10.

The River Valley Conference claimed the Class 2A Team title when Mid-Prairie won their second straight team title. The Golden Hawks scored 89 team points and had the top overall finisher in Marie Hostetler who crossed the finish line first in 18:02. Hostetler won the race in 2017. Williamsburg was second and Woodbury Central-Kingsley Pierson was third. Cascade was the other RVC school in the team race. The Cougars placed 6th led by Madison Kelchen in 6th and Madeline Rhomberg in 11th place.
