DES MOINES — Ames Swimming and Diving Coach Dan Flannery is the 2018 recipient of the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union's Golden Plaque of Distinction Award. Flannery was honored at the Iowa Girls State Swimming Finals on Saturday, November 3.
Flannery has been the head girls swimming and diving at Ames since 2002 and has been leading the boy's program since 1998. Since being named the head girls coach in 2002, Ames' varsity dual meet record is 140-11-1. In the last nine years, the Little Cyclones have won seven state championships. The seven state championships rank second on Iowa's all-time list while 106 of his swimmers have earned NISCA all-American honors. Nineteen swimmers have won an individual state title and 16 state records have been broken by an Ames swimmer in the last 10 years. Ames became only the third school in Iowa history to win the girls swimming and boys swimming team titles in the same academic year when Flannery guided the Cyclones to their first boy's state championship last February.
Dan and his wife, Jodi, have three children, Joe, Tommy, and Leah.
