WILTON — The Wilton wrestling team will send five wrestlers to the state tournament this week in Des Moines. Wilton had nine wrestlers going for state bids at last Saturday’s district meet at home. Qualifying for the state meet were Kael Brisker at 106, Cory Anderson at 138, Trey Brisker at 152, Cameron Reddick at 195 and Calib Lilly at 220. The quintet will compete Thursday at the 2018 state wrestling tournament in Des Moines.
Beaver senior Trey Brisker won the 152-pound weight class and improved to 48-1 overall. Brisker is ranked number one at 152 heading into the state meet. Brisker pinned Durant’s Cameron Ragurrio in the semifinals in 1:00 to advance to the finals. There, he wrestled third-ranked Kaden Kilburg from Lisbon in the finals. In that match, Brisker would win by a 6-2 decision. Brisker led 2-0 after the first period after getting a takedown seven seconds into the match. Brisker would use a 4-1 point run in the second period to take a 6-1 lead. Brisker scored two takedowns in the period. Kilburg scored a point in the final period to set the score at 6-2, which was the final score.
Four Beavers placed second at their weight class. They were Kael Brisker at 106, Cory Anderson at 138, Cameron Reddick at 195 and Calib Lilly at 220.
Brisker improved to 37-16. He won an 11-8 decision over Tyler Siemen in the semifinals by lost to Wapello’s Colton Meeker in the finals by a 9-4 decision. Meeker had 34 wins. Brisker advanced to state as the runner-up after not having a wrestleback match.
Anderson improved to 41-7 and is ranked #8. Anderson pinned Cory Stewart in 1:16 in the semifinals. In the finals, Anderson was upset by a loss by pin in 5:30 by Javis Krieger from New London. Krieger improved to 40-5 with the win. Anderson advanced to state as the runner-up after not having a wrestleback match.
Reddick improved to 40-10 and is ranked tenth. He won a 6-1 decision over Rowan Udell from Iowa City Regina to reach the finals. There, he faced ninth-ranked Jake Jennett from Lisbon in the finals. There, Jennett won an 8-5 decision to claim the weight class. Reddick fell behind 5-2 after the first period scoring a two-point reversal halfway through the opening period. Reddick scored a takedown in the second period and an escape period in the third period for his five points. Reddick advanced to state as the runner-up after not having a wrestleback match.
Lilly improved to 25-23 and advanced to state. He was pinned by eighth ranked Logan O’Connor from Lisbon in the semifinals in 3:53. Lilly would pin Grant Tenley from North Cedar in the third-place match in 1:07. Lilly got a wrestleback match after O’Connor won the weight class by pin in the finals. In the wrestleback match, Lilly pinned New London’s Jaxon Allen in 4:47 to earn runner-up and a spot at state.
A pair of Beavers placed third at their respective weight classes. Eli Faison placed third at 160 and improved to 31-14 with a pin over Dan Burton of Highland in the third place match. Burton had 26 wins. Faison pinned Burton in 0:40. Faison had a takedown and 3-point nearfall run of points in a span of 12 seconds before getting the pin. Faison lost a 9-2 decision to 7th ranked Ryan Schott from Iowa City Regina. Schott lost to 3rd ranked Brennan Swafford from Mediapolis in the finals, nixing a wrestleback chance for Faison.
John Rife placed third at 195. Rife pinned Tyler Thurston from North Cedar in 4:00 in the semifinals, but lost to third-ranked Hunter Connor from Louisa-Muscatine in the finals. Rife was then in a wrestleback match with Ethan Allie from Belle Plaine. There, he fell by a tight 3-2 decision to place third.
Three Beavers placed fourth at the district meet and did not win a match. They were Colton Cruse at 113, Reid Johnson at 126 and Coy Baker at 170. Cruse ends the year 30-18, Johnson ends the year 28-10 and Baker ends the year 26-24.
Knights Come Up Empty At Districts
WILTON — The North Cedar Knight wrestling team sent four wrestlers to the district meet last Saturday in Wilton. They were Tyler Thurston at 182, Grant Tenley at 220 and Chase Gallagher at 285.
Tyler Thurston improved to 31-13 and ends the season with that record. Thurston lost to John Rife from Wilton by pin in 4:00 in the semifinals. In the third place match, Thurston lost a 5-1 decision to Ethan Allie from Belle Plaine.
Grant Tenley placed fourth and ends the season with a record of 27-14. He lost by pin to Jaxson Allen from New London in 2:50 in the semifinals. In the third-place match, he was pinned by Calib Lilly from Wilton in 1:07.
Chase Gallagher placed fourth and ends the season with a record of 29-15. He lost by pin to Gabe Hayes from Louisa-Muscatine in the semifinals. In the third-place match, he was pinned by Jacob Barnhart from West Branch in 3:16.
Tough Day For Durant’s Ragurrio
WILTON — Durant freshman Cameron Ragurrio’s season came to an end Saturday afternoon. He finishes his first varsity season with a record of 28-20 after qualifying for the district meet as a sectional runner-up last week.
In the semifinals, Ragurrio was pinned by top-ranked class 1A wrestling Trey Brisker from Wilton in 1:00. In the third place match, Ragurrio was pinned by Hunter Aney from Mediapolis in a time of 5:38. Ragurrio finished the day in fourth place.
Beavers Know First Round Opponents
WILTON — The five Beavers that are advancing to the state tournament now know their first-round opponents.
At 106, Kael Brisker will take on unranked Bryce Shaha from Mt. Ayr. Both wrestlers are freshmen. Brisker is 37-16 and Shaha is 38-2.
At 138, 8th ranked Cory Anderson will face #10 Marvin Hildreth from West Monona-Whiting. Hildreth is a senior and 46-3 on the season.
At 152, top-ranked Trey Brisker will open the state tournament against unranked Michael Baker from Underwood. Brisker is 48-1 while Baker is 23-11 and a junior.
At 195, Cameron Reddick has a tough draw in the first round. Reddick ranked #10 and 40-10 as a senior, will wrestle top-ranked Tanner Sloan from Alburnett who is 44-1.
At 220, Calib Lilly will wrestle Monte Pottebaum from West Lyon. Pottebaum is 32-3 and a senior while Lilly is 25-23 and a junior.
