TIPTON — Tipton rolled out the welcome mat for Wilton and Monticello last week, but their guests were not kind, beating the hometown Tigers in each game. Wilton beat Tipton 60-40 last Tuesday and Monticello came away with a 53-31 win last Friday. The losses set the Tigers record at 6-13 heading to the final week. Tipton will host state-ranked Iowa City Regina Tuesday before traveling to Columbus Junction Thursday for a makeup game. The Tigers and Wildcats were to play this past Monday, February 5, but snowy weather forced the cancellation of events in Eastern Iowa. The Tigers will enter this week on a three-game losing streak after winning at Durant on January 23.

Against Wilton, Tipton saw a close game after one quarter gets away. The Tigers trailed by just two points, 15-13 after the first quarter. Even though the Beavers outscored Tipton 12-8 in the second quarter, the Beaver lead was six points, 27-21 at halftime. In the second half, Wilton outscored the Tigers 33 to 19 including a big 18-9 run in the third quarter to put the game out of reach.

Kamryn Chapman led Tipton in scoring after making her first varsity start. She scored 12 points and grabbed 7 rebounds. Emily Hermsen scored 9 points while Amanda Smith scored 8 points and had a team-high 16 rebounds to go with 4 assists and 3 steals. Tipton made 14 field goals and was 9-for-16 from the free throw line. Tipton had 39 rebounds in the game. The Tigers lost to the Beavers 54-39 back on December 15 in Wilton.

The Beavers were led by juniors Kortney Drake and Emily Lange. Each scored 21 points. Lange on 9-for-17 shooting and 3-for-4 from the free throw line. She recorded a double-double with 11 rebounds. Drake shot 7-for-11 and made 7-of-9 free throw attempts. She had 5 steals, 4 assists, and 3 rebounds. Tipton’s defense held Aubrey Putman to just one point and 4 rebounds. Putman came into the game averaging 12.6 points and was the Beavers leading rebounder. Wilton shot nearly 50-percent from the field in the game and made 13-of-19 free throws. The Beavers had 23 rebounds.

Friday, Tipton fell 53-31 to Monticello. The Panthers are ranked in Class 3A in the latest Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union poll. The Panthers led by only three, 13-10 after the first quarter, but a 13-4 second-quarter run gave Monticello a 26-14 halftime lead. The Panthers extended their lead by five after three quarters, 37-20 and outscored the Tigers 16-11 in the final quarter.

Three Panthers reached double figures in the win. Taylor McDonald scored 19, Lauren Ries 16 and Maddie Fellinger 10 for Monticello. Jordan Kuper chipped in 6 points and 12 rebounds.

Samantha DeMoss led Tipton in scoring with 10 points on 5-for-11 shooting. Emily Hermsen and Allie Ryan each scored 6 points.

The Tigers will begin Class 3A postseason play Saturday at Mid-Prairie. The game will be at 7:00 p.m. in Wellman. The winner of that game will play at Davenport Assumption next week in a class 3A Regional Semifinal.
