TIPTON — The Tipton girls basketball team will open the 2018 postseason on the road, and in a new class. After playing in class 2A for many years, the Tigers will enter postseason play in Class 3A, Region 5. Teams in the Region are Davenport Assumption, Northeast, Mid-Prairie, Camanche, West Liberty, Central Lee, and Davis County.
The Tigers are on the top half of the eight-team region and will travel to Wellman on Saturday for a 7:00 p.m. Class 3A quarterfinal. The winner of that game will play the winner of Assumption-Northeast on Wednesday, February 14 in a Region 5 semifinal. The winner of that game will play in the Region 5 final at Pleasant Valley on Saturday, February 17 at 7:00 p.m.
The Tigers have lost both games against the Golden Hawks this season, but have played Mid-Prairie close at times. The Tigers lost at Wellman 56-52 to begin the season and lost 62-49 at home in early January.
The Golden Hawks have struggled as of late winning only two of their last nine games. Addie Rath leads Mid-Prairie with a 17.0-point scoring average and also is the Golden Hawks top rebounder and steal leader.
Beavers Wait For First Round Opponent
WILTON — The Wilton Beaver girls basketball team will have three extra days off while waiting for their first-round opponent for the start of the 2018 postseason. Wilton will open on Tuesday, February 13 at home in a Class 2A Region 5 quarterfinal. Their opponent will be the winner of this Saturday’s first-round game between West Branch and Louisa-Muscatine at West Branch. The Beavers have beaten the Bears twice and won at Louisa-Muscatine. Wilton beat West Branch 76-74 at West Branch in November and 77-42 at home in early January. Wilton owns a 79-50 non-conference road win at Louisa-Muscatine.
The winner of the regional quarterfinal likely will play state-ranked Iowa City Regina. The Regals also open on February 13 against the winner of the first round game between Columbus Junction and Wapello. That Region 5 semifinal would be in Iowa City. The Region 5 Final will be played at Riverside Teams on the bottom half of the bracket are Mediapolis, Sigourney, Danville, Cardinal, Van Buren, and West Burlington. The winner of the Region 5 Final will advance to the state tournament.
THS Boys Basketball Team Begins Postseason At Home Monday
TIPTON — The Tipton Tiger boys basketball team doesn’t have far to go for their postseason opener on Monday, February 12. The Tigers will begin Class 2A District 9 play at home on Monday in a first-round game against Wilton. The game will be the first of two as Durant will play Louisa-Muscatine at 6:30 with the Tigers-Beavers match up to follow. The winner will play three days later, Thursday, February 15 at Camanche against Northeast in the second game of two. The home Indians play the winner of Durant-Louisa-Muscatine at 6:30 the same night. The winners of the two semifinals at Camanche will play in a district final on Tuesday, February 20 at DeWitt.
Camanche and Northeast have the best records in the district and are the top two seeds in the district. Northeast is 16-5 while Camanche is 14-6. The Tigers lost to both teams this year in the regular season. The Rebels top scorers are senior Luke Empen (16.5 ppg), Dawson Stoll (13.2 ppg) and Braeden Hoyer (12.0 ppg). The Indians leading scorers are Cameron Soenksen (17.0 ppg) and Dev Patel (14.5 ppg)
