Three Knights Advance To Districts

  LISBON — The North Cedar Knights had six compete at the Lisbon sectional meet last Saturday. Three will advance to this week’s Wilton district meet. The trio of Tyler Thurston, Grant Tenley and Chase Gallagher all advance to this week’s district. Thurston and Gallagher were sectional champs at 182 and 285 while Tenley was the runner-up at 220.

  In the team race, Lisbon won the meet with 256.6 points, the only team over 200 points in the eight-team sectional. Lisbon had ten wrestlers win their weight class. Highland placed second with 141 points and Iowa City Regina was third with 116 points. The Huskies were second and will join Lisbon at Tuesday’s Regional dual meet. North Cedar nearly topped 100 points, scoring 98 points to place fourth.

  Thurston improved to 31-11 with two wins. He had a bye in the quarterfinals and pinned Cole Clark from Lisbon who had 28 wins, in 5:27 in the semifinals. In the finals, Thurston upset the top seed in the bracket, Ethan Allie from Belle Plaine with a pin in 3:24 to capture the weight class. Allie was the South Iowa Cedar League Champion at the 182-pound weight class.

  Tenley is 27-12 heading to districts. There were only two guys in the 220-pound weight class. Tenley had byes in the quarterfinals and semifinals and in the finals, was pinned by Logan O’Connor in 1:09. O’Connor is ranked #8.

  Gallagher was the top seed at 285 at the meet. He improved to 29-13 with two wins. He had a bye in the quarterfinals and pinned Trey Shalla from Lone Tree in 1:02 in the semifinals. In the finals, he pinned Jacob Barnhart from West Branch in 5:21 to win the weight class.

  Brody Hawtrey and Devon Willis each placed third at 138 and 145 respectively. Hawtrey ends his season with a record of 17-12 after battling injuries this season. Hawtrey had a bye in the quarterfinals and won an 11-6 decision over Regina’s Theo Kolie in the semifinals. Hawtrey lost in the finals and had one more chance to advance. In the second place match, Hawtrey lost a 6-4 overtime decision to Clay McCoy from Lisbon. Hawtrey led 4-2 late in the third period of the match, but a late reversal by McCoy sent the match to overtime. There, McCoy captured the win with a takedown with 48 seconds left.

  Willis was pinned in the semifinals and worked his way back, winning a 10-3 decision over Jacob Graves in the third-place match. He would finish third as Willis lot out on a wrestle back match due to criteria of facing and losing to Highland’s Brady Hahn.

  Miller had two matches after having a bye in the quarterfinals. He was pinned in 1:08 by Highland’s Cullen Klebe in the 3rd place match after being pinned in the semifinals, sending him to the consolation round.

138 - Brody Hawtrey (17-12) - had bye in quarterfinals; won an 11-6 decision over Theo Kolie (ICR) 14-21 in semifinals; lost an 11-1 major decision to Cory Stewart (HIGH) 31-8 in finals; lost a 6-4 decision to Clay McCoy (L) 5-3 in second place match. FINAL PLACE — 3rd.

145 - Devon Willis (28-8) - had a bye in quarterfinals; pinned in 1:57 by Brady Hahn (HIGH) 32-11 in semifinals; won a 10-3 decision over Jacob Graves (WB) in 3rd place match; 2nd Place Match - lost by rule - Criteria over Hahn (HIGH) 32-11. FINAL PLACE — 3rd.

285 - Chase Gallagher (29-13) - had bye in quarterfinals; pinned Trey Shalla (LT) 27-20 in 1:02 in the semifinals; pinned Jacob Barnhart (WB) 19-16 in 5:21 in finals. FINAL PLACE — SECTIONAL CHAMPION.

Wildcats Send One To Districts
  LISBON — The Durant Wildcats will have one wrestler advance to this week’s district meet in Wilton. Cameron Ragurrio was the sectional runner-up at the 152-pound weight class and will advance to the district meet. Durant had two wrestlers compete at the sectional meet. Senior Mason Bird was the other Wildcat in action. He placed third and saw his season end with a 33-12 record.

  Ragurrio improved to 28-18 and will take that record and a sectional runner-up finish to this week’s district meet. Ragurrio had a bye in the quarterfinals and pinned Lone Tree’s Will Hotz (22-17) in 1:25 to advance to the finals. There, Ragurrio was pinned by 3rd ranked Kaden Kilburg from Lisbon in 35 seconds. Ragurrio did not have to wrestle again as he held criteria over 3rd place winner, Hotz.

  Bird had a bye in the quarterfinal to reach the semifinals. There, Bird faced Jacob Barnhart from West Branch. Bird lost to Barnhart at the RVC meet, placing fourth. In a close match, Bird trailed 2-1 after two periods. In the final period, Barnhart used a 6-0 run with an escape, takedown, and 3-point near fall to capture an 8-1 decision win. Bird fought back in the third-place match, pinning Trey Shalla from Lone Tree in 1:05 to capture third. He did not get a wrestleback after Barnhardt lost in the finals and held criteria in a wrestleback chance.
