SOLON — It was a tough first year for the Tigers at Class 2A sectional meet. The Tigers, who have been in class 1A for many years, made the jump to Class 2A this season and traveled to Solon for a 2A sectional meet. There, the Tigers placed fifth out of six teams and sent one wrestler on to this week’s district meet in DeWitt. Tipton’s John Crowley won the 126-pound weight class and will represent the Tigers this week at the DeWitt district meet.
In the team race, Tipton scored 108.5 points, one of five teams to score over 100 points. Solon won the meet with a team score of 243.5 points. Mt. Vernon was second with 199.5 points. DeWitt was third with 160.5 points.
Tipton had one champion and two wrestlers place third. John Crowley was the top seed at 126. He improved to 39-7 with two wins and captured a trip to this week’s district meet in DeWitt. Crowley had a bye in the quarterfinals and pinned Connor Bilden from Mount Vernon in the semifinals. Crowley stuck at takedown with 1:46 left in the match and captured the pin in 33 seconds. In the finals, he dominated Solon’s Aidan Dall, winning a 15-0 tech fall in 4:56. Dall had 30 wins. Crowley led 2-0 after the first period but opened up the match with 13 points in the final two periods. In the second, he scored six points on an escape, takedown and 3-point near fall to take an 8-0 lead to the final period. In the final period, he had a takedown, a 2-point near fall and a 3-point near fall.
Placing third was Austin Lenz at 106 and Brenden Leeper at 138. Lenz saw his season end with a record of 41-8. Lenz had a bye in the quarterfinals to advance to the semifinals. There, he was upset by Ben Vogel from Camanche (27-17) by pin in 5:07. Lenz led 4-1 after the first period after getting two takedowns. That score stood until Vogel scored a takedown with 1:32 left in the match to set the score at 4-3. Shortly after the takedown, Vogel recorded the pin to win the match in 5:07. Lenz tried to work his way back to a wrestleback chance with a pin over Jaruthat Dervo from Mt. Vernon in 3:01 in the third-place match. Lenz however, could only watch as Ben Vogel was pinned in 0:36 in the finals by top seed Keaton Zeimet from DeWitt who is ranked third. Vogel’s win over Lenz was the difference as he placed second and held criteria over Lenz to advance.
Leeper also placed third at 138 and finishes his season 14-17. Leeper was pinned in the semifinals and had to work back through the consolation side. He pinned Jason Hulin from Camanche in 1:32 in the third-place match and got a chance at a wrestleback match. In the second place match, Leeper lost an 8-1 decision to Remington Overstake from Northeast to finish third.
A trio of Tigers placed fourth at the sectional meet. Placing fourth was Brandon Hines at 132, Dylan Mente at 170 and Jessie Lieser at 285.
Hines ends the season 13-20. He won a 9-2 quarterfinal decision over Collin Courtney from DeWitt. Hines led 2-0 after the first period after a late takedown. Hines extended his lead to 8-0 after the second period after collecting an escape, takedown and 3-point near fall in the period. In the semifinals, Hines lost by pin to Solon’s Christian Height, the top seed in the bracket. Hines would lose by decision in the third-place match to finish fourth.
Mente ends the season with a record of 25-25 and placed fourth at 170. Mente pinned Logan Waltz from Camanche in 1:17 in the quarterfinals at 170. In the semifinals, he was pinned by Mount Vernon wrestler Paul Ryan. Mente tried to work his way back through the consolation round but was pinned by Northeast’s Tristan Daniels in the third-place match.
At 285, Jessie Lieser finishes the season 13-26. He pinned Cameron Lee from DeWitt in 5:24 in the quarterfinals in 5:24. In the semifinal’s, Lieser was pinned by Solon’s Tyler Linderbaum in 1:31. Linderbaum was the top seed in the bracket and is ranked number three and is undefeated. Lieser tried to work his way back in the consolation round, but lost in the third-place match to finish fourth.
Three Tigers placed fifth. All three lost in the first round, but due to low numbers in their bracket, wrestled only once at the sectional meet. Placing fifth were Kaleb Mesick at 113, Levi Mohr at 160 and Nick Paul at 182. Paul ends the season with a record of 13-21, Mesick at 16-13 and Mohr at 14-24.
Two Tipton wrestlers placed sixth and did not win a match. Chance Koch placed sixth at 14 and ended his season with a record of 13-31 and Lucas Barnum placed 6th at 152 and ended his season with a record of 12-22.
