Wilton wins Mediapolis Sectional, Advances 10 To District Meet

MEDIAPOLIS — The Wilton wrestling team had a fine day at the Mediapolis sectional meet last Saturday. There, the Beavers won the sectional to advance to Tuesday’s Regional duals in Lisbon, and the Beavers had ten individual wrestlers qualify for Saturday’s district meet. That meet will be in Wilton Saturday where the top-2 at each weight class will advance to the traditional state tournament the following week in Des Moines.

Qualifying for the district meet are Kael Brisker (106), Colton Cruse (113), Reid Johnson (126), Cory Anderson (138), Trey Brisker (152), Eli Faison (160), Coy Baker (170), John Rife (182), Cameron Reddick (195) and Calib Lilly (220). Of those, three are ranked in the 1A rankings with Anderson #8, Brisker #1 and Reddick #10 at their respective weight classes.

Wilton had three sectional champions at the meet. They were Reid Johnson at 126, Trey Brisker at 152 and Cameron Reddick at 195. Johnson was back in the lineup after missing time due to being sick. He did not wrestle at the RVC meet on January 27. Seven Beavers placed as runners-up. They were Kael Brisker, Cruse, Anderson, Faison, Baker, Reife and Lilly. Baker and Rife had to wrestle-back for a true second-place finish.

In the team race, Wilton scored 237 points and was the only team in the 8-team sectional to score over 200 points. New London was second with 143 points and Louisa-Muscatine was third with 124 points. Mediapolis also scored over 100 points with 116 to finish fourth.

Trey Sulzberger placed third at 132 but didn’t get a wrestleback chance. Other Wilton finishers were Hunter Stoll (120) and Dylan Leinen (285) fourth and Brady Murphy 5th at 145.

Beavers Will Travel To Lisbon For Regional Duals
MEDIAPOLIS — The Wilton Beavers will travel to Lisbon Tuesday night to compete in a Class 1A regional dual meet. There, four teams will vie for a spot in the 2018 state dual meet. The Beavers qualified for the Regional duals after winning the Mediapolis sectional meet last Saturday. New London also qualified after finishing second in the team standings.

#11 Wilton will face #25 Pekin in one semifinal while #2 Lisbon will face unranked New London in the other semifinal. The winners of the semifinals meet with the winner advancing to the state dual tournament.

Two other River Valley Conference schools also are in Regional duals Tuesday. Cascade is #35 and will wrestle #33 Sigourney-Keota in a semifinal at Don Bosco. West Liberty is #7 and will wrestle #43 Columbus Junction in a semifinal at Solon. The Spartans are #8 and could set up a two-team, top-10 matchup in the finals.
