THS junior goes to state as Sectional and District Champ

SOLON — State bound. That is the message that Tipton junior John Crowley sent out Saturday afternoon after coming out of the class 2A DeWitt district meet as the champion of the 126-pound weight class. Crowley won both matches on the day to earn his first state tournament trip. The 2018 individual state tournament begins this Thursday morning at 9:00 a.m. for class 2A. Crowley will wrestle there, in a first-round match against Mitchell Joines from Sioux City Heelan.

At the tournament in Solon, there were 23 ranked wrestlers. Solon came out of the district meet with five state qualifiers with both Dubuque Wahlert and Dyersville-Beckman next with four. Solon won the team race with 106 points. Dyersville-Beckman placed second with 73.5 points and Dubuque Wahlert was third with 70. Tipton scored 18.5 points, all from Crowley.

Crowley had the top seed at the weight class. Other seeds were Morgan Rowley from Anamosa, 2nd; Aidan Dall from Solon, 3rd; and Keegan Scheeler from CPU, 4th. Rowley and Crowley were sectional champs and Dall and Scheeler were sectional runners-up.

In the first district semifinal, Crowley won an 18-1 tech fall in 5:19 over Keegan Scheeler from Center Point-Urbana. Scheeler had a record of 23-12. Crowley scored two takedowns and a 3-point near fall in the first period, giving up only an escape point while taking a 7-1 lead after the first period. Crowley added his third takedown of the match with 1:04 left in the second period and, extended his lead to 12-1 with 45 seconds left in the match with his second 3-point near fall. Crowley used a 6-0 run in the final period to claim the tech fall. Crowley scored the points on two, 3-point near falls. In the match, Crowley had four 3-point near falls and three takedowns to amass 18 points.

In the second semi-final, Anamosa’s Morgan Rowley won an 8-4 decision over Aidan Dall of Solon. Rowley, ranked 7th at his weight class with a record of 46-5, pinned Dall at the WaMac conference meet last month in the quarterfinals at 126, in 5:07. His win set up a showdown with Crowley for the 126-pound title.

In the finals, Crowley beat Rowley 15-3 by major decision and saw his points, when scored, come in bunches. Crowley wasted little time in getting a lead, outscoring Rowley 7-1 in the opening period. A takedown and 3-point near fall in a span of 12 seconds set the tone of the match and the score at 5-0 Crowley. Rowley would escape to score a single point to set the score at 5-1, but Crowley responded with a takedown with 29 seconds left in the period to take a 7-1 lead.

Rowley started on top in the second period and got Crowley in a bad spot, scoring a 2-point near fall on the Tiger junior to get the match to 7-3. Crowley worked out of the jam to score an escape point three seconds later at 1:19 left in the second period to set the score at 8-3. Crowley then turned the tables on Rowley, being the aggressor himself, and scored his own takedown and two-point near fall for five points in a span of four seconds to take a 12-3 lead to the final period.

In the final period, Crowley scored three more points on an escape and a late takedown with 25 seconds left, to set the final at 15-3.

The rest of the bracket played out with Aidan Dall pinning Scheeler from CPU in 2:21 in the third-place match. Dall however, was denied a wrestleback chance as he lost to Rowley earlier in the day in the second semifinals.

The 2018 traditional state tournament begins Thursday at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines and runs through Saturday. The class 2A schedule is as follows: Thursday, February 15 - 9:00 a.m.-noon (1st round and 1st round consolations); Friday, February 16 - 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. (2A quarterfinals and 2nd round consolations) and 2:30-5:30 p.m. (2A semifinals and 3rd round consolations); Saturday, February 17 - 10:00 a.m.-2:15 p.m. (2A consolation semifinals and finals) and 6:00 p.m. - Finals for all classes.

Crowley Will Face Mitchell Joines
DES MOINES — Tipton junior John Crowley will wrestle Mitchell Joines from Sioux City Heelan in the first round. Joines, a freshman, comes to state with a record of 38-12 and the runner-up at his weight class in class 2A district 8. He advanced to state by pinning his district semifinal opponent in 5:40 and placing second after a 5-0 decision loss to Isaac Bryan from Sergeant-Bluff Luton in the finals of the 126-pound weight class. Bryan had a record of 40-13 and also was a freshman. The two met the week before in the sectional meet with Bryan winning that match as well.

At the sectional meet, Joines had to wrestle back to earn a trip to the district meet. He reached the finals where he lost to Bryan by a 4-0 decision. He won by a 19-8 major decision in a wrestleback match.

The winner of the match will face the winner of top-ranked Eric Fraught from Clear Lake (48-0) and 6th ranked Hunter Pfantz from West Marshall (39-6). Also in Crowley’s half of the 126 brackets on the lower pod is 3rd ranked Philip Ihde from Decorah and #4 Jalen Schropp from Williamsburg.
