WILTON — The Wilton softball team begins their state tournament run this week in Fort Dodge. The Beavers will be making their first state tournament appearance since the 2009 season and fourth overall. Louisa-Muscatine is making their first trip to the state tournament this season.

Wilton played Louisa-Muscatine earlier this season with the Falcons winning 5-3. Louisa-Muscatine scored all five of their runs in the bottom of the fifth inning in the game while Wilton scored all three of their runs in the top of the sixth inning. Chloe Wells took the loss for Wilton and Isabelle True was the winning pitcher for the Falcons. True struck out eight Wilton batters.

Wilton had five hits in that game with Wells leading, going 2-for-2 with a run Emily Coss had a hit and RBI while Payton Ganzer and Alexis Walker each had hits. Kali Milder had a RBI in the game. For the Falcons, three players had multi hit games. Kylee Sanders, Katie Koppe and Mallory Hohenadel each had two of the eight Louisa-Muscatine hits. Koppe drove in two of the five runs.

The Falcons and Beavers have played at least once in each of the past five seasons. All but one of those years were at weekend softball tournaments. The Falcons have won the last three meetings spanning the last two years and four of the last five. Wilton won both meetings in 2015 and their only game in 2014 at the Muscatine tournament.

The Falcons have the most wins among the eight class 2A teams. They are the only team with 30 or more wins. The Falcons and Alta-Aurelia are making their first state trips in school history.

Half of the 2A field comes from two conferences. Wilton and Iowa City Regina are from the River Valley Conference. The Regals were runners-up in the South Division while Wilton was fourth. Des Moines Christian were runners-up in the West Central conference and Earlham was fourth in the same conference.

There are only two conference champions among the eight teams. Central Springs was the champion of the Top of Iowa Conference and Alta-Aurelia was the champion of the Twin Lakes conference. Logan-Magnolia placed third in the Western Iowa Conference.

The Falcons reached state by beating a pair of fellow Southeast Iowa Super Conference members - Danville and Wapello - and then beating #13 East Marshall in the Regional Final. Wilton advanced to state by beating RVC North foe Cascade at home, #14 Jesup on the road in the Regional semifinal, and RVC North foe Bellevue 10-0 in five innings, in the Regional Final game.

Two current L+M pitchers have pitched against the Beavers in their careers. Isabelle True is 2-0 in three starts having pitched in 16 2/3 innings. She has given up 11 runs in those games, eight of which were earned. She has struck out 16 batters and walked nine in that time. Hailey Sanders also has pitched and is 1-1 in two starts. Sanders has nine strikeouts against two walks in eight innings pitched.

The winner of the game between the Falcons and Beavers will play in the 2A state semifinals on Wednesday, July 18 at 3:00 p.m.
