LISBON — The North Cedar baseball team traveled to Lisbon on Thursday, July 5 to play the second ranked team in class 1A to wrap-up their regular season. There, the Knights gave the Lions a great game, before ultimately falling by two runs, 11-9.
Alex Woodward started and pitched the first 2 1/3 innings. He was one of three North Cedar pitchers to throw in the game. Woodward gave up two runs on two hits. He struck out one and walked one. Cole Taylor pitched two innings in relief. He gave up six runs on four hits and struck out one and walked two Lion batters. Devon Willis took the loss after working the final 1 2/3 innings. He gave up three runs on four hits and walked two batters.
Lisbon improved to 30-0 with the win. The Lions have only been in five games where the margin was two runs or less, including the game with North Cedar this season.
Lisbon led 1-0 after one inning of play. North Cedar scored twice in the top of the third to take a 2-1 lead. Lisbon grabbed the lead back with a three-run third to take a 4-2 lead. North Cedar answered those runs in the top of the fourth. There, North Cedar scored three runs to set the score at 5-4, Knights. Lisbon tied the game at 5 with a single run in the fourth. Lisbon scored six combined runs over the fifth and sixth innings to take an 11-5 lead. North Cedar rallied, with four runs in the top of the seventh inning to cut the lead to 11-9, but could get no closer.
North Cedar had eight hits in the game. Ethan Sahr was 3-for-3 with a double and 4 RBI’s. Devon Willis was 3-for-3 with a RBI. Gage Walshire had a hit and RBI while Austyn Sander added a single. Tyler Jackson had two of the eight North Cedar walks in the game. Sahr, Willis, Tyler Thurston, Brennen Kreel, Woodward and Jaxson Sander also reached base via walks.
Hagen Waters was the winning pitcher and improved to 4-0 in 24 2/3 innings after relieving starter Cole Siebrecht who started the game and gave up five runs, three earned, on five hits over four innings. The three earned runs, were three of only 14 earned runs that Siebrecht has given up this season. Siebrecht struck out six, and walked five. Waters gave up four runs, struck out four and walked two batters.
Four Lions had multi-hit games. Brett Givens was 3-for-4 with a double and RBI. Tyson Williams, Bryce Werderman and Ryne Mohrfeld each had two hits. Hagen Waters and Mohrfeld each had 2 RBI’s.
