IOWA CITY — On paper the match up was between two, top-10 ranked class 2A teams. On the field, it was a different story. Last Monday, the top ranked Durant Wildcats beat No. 8 Iowa City Regina twice, by scores of 4-0 and 4-1 in grand fashion. Though the score margin was not wide, the Wildcats dominated the Regals in the two games, as Wildcat pitching allowed only two hits in the two games combined.
Durant junior Kamryn Meyer pitched a no-hitter in game one. Meyer shut down the Regals offense that has hit at or near .300 all season. Meyer needed 112 pitches in seven innings and struck out 13 Regals. She walked two batters.
Durant broke a scoreless game in the top of the fifth with a single run. The Wildcats extended their lead to 4-0 with a three-run sixth. The big hit in the inning was a three-run double by Paige Werthmann that scored Ruby Kappeler, Kamryn Meyer and Kira Schult. Kappeler reached on an error, Meyer a single and Schult a double earlier in the inning.
Katie Bracken took the loss after seven innings. She struck out eight Durant batters. Durant had seven hits in the game led by Werthman who had two of the seven. Hannah Happ, Kappeler, Meyer, Schult and Jada Rock had the others.
In game two, Durant pushed four runs across the plate in the first inning to take an early lead. Regina scored their only run in the bottom of the sixth.
Jenna Lawson was the winning pitcher with a complete game. She struck out six, walked one and gave up one run on two hits.
Durant had ten hits in the game. Ruby Kappeler, Kira Schult, and Paige Werthmann all had two hits while Hannah Happ, Kamryn Meyer, Mallory Warner and Ally Happ all collected hits. Schult and Werthmann each had 2 RBI’s.
Paisley Gardner was 2-for-3 with a RBI to lead the Regals at the plate. Emma Nibaur started and took the loss after giving up four runs on five hits in 1/3 innings.
