Six Named All-District, Hopkins Top Coach

  DURANT — Six Conservative area softball players were named to the class 2A Southeast All-District team late last week by the Iowa Girls Coaches Association. Also, Durant head coach Steve Hopkins was named the class 2A Southeast District Coach of the Year.

  Players named to the All-District team were Kamryn Meyer, Ruby Kappeler and Hannah Happ from Durant; Alyssa Barnhart from North Cedar; and Kortney Drake and Chloe Wells from WIlton.

  Meyer led Durant in batting with a .504 average, 59 hits and 44 RBI’s. Meyer had a 22-2 pitching record this summer in 144 2/3 innings. She had an ERA of 0.82 with 235 strikeouts. Happ was second on the Wildcats in batting with a .424 average and 50 hits. She had 25 RBI’s and a team best 18 stolen bases. Kappeler batted .305 with 36 hits with 27 RBI’s.

  Kortney Drake led Wilton in hits with 66 and stolen bases with 15. She batted .471 and had 16 doubles and 26 RBI’s. Wells had 63 hits and led Wilton in batting average (.504), home runs (9) and RBI’s (60). Wells also pitched and had a record of 11-10 in 119 1/3 innings with an ERA of 3.11 and 70 strikeouts.

  Barnhart led North Cedar in batting with a .455 average and hits with 35. She had 10 RBI’s, six doubles and three triples. Barnhart pitched to a 5-13 record in 105 2/3 innings with 70 strikeouts.

  Hopkins, who won career game number 300 in 2017, guided Durant to a 32-3 record this season. His career record is now 336 wins against 84 losses in 420 games coached for a winning percentage of 80-percent. The Wildcats were ranked #1 the entire season in class 2A. The Wildcats were one of only three, class 2A teams to win more than 30 ball games this summer. North Linn (38) and Louisa-Muscatine (35) were the others. Offensively, Durant was 6th in 2A in hits with 342 as a team and led class 2A in team ERA with a combined ERA of 0.79. Durant pitchers were also fourth in class 2A in strikeouts as a team with 321. The Wildcats beat ranked foes West Liberty, Camanche and Iowa City Regina in conference play. Durant beat ranked Dubuque Hempstead, Louisa-Muscatine in non-conference play.

  Six other River Valley Conference players were named to class 3A All-District teams. Two West Liberty Comets were named to the 3A Southeast team. They were junior Macy Akers and sophomore Haylee Lehman.

  Four RVC players were named to the 3A Northeast All-District team. They were Camanche junior Madi Parson and sophomore Tarah Wedhe and Monticello senior Taylor McDonald and Northeast senior Cassidy DonDiego.
