Tigers Cap Off Big Week With Durant Wins
DURANT — Playing on the road for their second RVC doubleheader, the Tigers collected two more wins against Cedar County rival Durant. The Tigers won game one 9-5 and game two, 10-4. The wins set the Tigers record against RVC South teams at 6-4 with three doubleheader sweeps this season.
In game one, Luke Becker pitched six strong innings to get the win. Becker gave up two runs on six hits and struck out five batters. Bryce Deerbert and Elliot Cummins also pitched in the game for the Tigers. Becker improved to 3-4 and lowered his ERA to 3.95.
The Tigers led 6-1 and 9-1 before Durant scored four late runs to make the final score closer at 9-5.
Quinten Mesick scored on an error in the first to get the Tigers on the scoreboard. Tipton added two runs in the second to take a 3-0 lead. Back-to-back RBI singles by Mesick and Dylan Mente accounted for the runs. The Tigers extended their lead to 5-0 with a two-run third scoring again on back-to-back RBI singles. This time from Kael Jauron and Luke Becker.
Durant scored their first run in the bottom of the fourth to set the score at 5-1. Tipton would take command of the ball game with a four-run sixth to take a 9-1 lead. The big hit in the inning was a two-run home run by senior Logan Hoffman that got the Tiger faithful to their feet.
Durant didn’t quit though, fighting back for four runs over the final two innings to get within four runs, but it wasn’t enough.
Tipton had 15 hits in the game and five Tigers had multi hit games. Quinten Mesick and Trent Pelzer each had three hits while Dylan Mente, Kael Jauron and Ben Emrich each had two hits. Mente drove in a team high 3 runs while Logan Hoffman had a two-run home run and Luke Becker had a hit and 2 RBI’s. Colby Kleppe also had a hit in the game.
Cole Miedema took the loss after seven innings of work. He struck out five, walked one and gave up nine runs.
Durant had eight hits in the game with Curtis Lilienthal and Mason Compton each collecting two hits each. Logan Callison, Nate Dierickx, Ty Chenault and Nathan Hultquist all had hits. Dierickx had 2 RBI’s while Callison and Compton had one RBI.
In game two, Cole Syring picked up his second win of the season with a fine outing. Syring pitched 5 2/3 innings to get the win. He gave up four runs on five hits and struck out three. Bryce Deerberg pitched the final 1 1/3 innings in relief and didn’t give up a run.
Tipton had 10 hits in the second game and was led by senior outfielder Ben Emrich who was 3-for-4 with a season best 4 RBI’s and a double. Luke Becker was 2-for-4 with a RBI and Quinten Mesick and Dylan Mente each had a hit and RBI. Trent Pelzer, Logan Hoffman and Colby Kleppe each had hits in the game too.
Tipton roughed up Durant starter Nate Dierickx in the second game. Dierickx pitched 2 2/3 innings and gave up ten runs on seven hits and struck out three. Brendan Paper pitched the final 4 1/3 innings and gave up no runs on three hits and struck out four.
Durant had six hits led by Ty Chenault who was 2-for-3 with a RBI. Mason Compton, Curtis LIlienthal, Paper and Marcus Engstler each had hits. Compton and Lilienthal each had RBI”s.
Tipton led 3-0 after the second inning. The Tigers took control of the game in the third inning. There, they scored seven runs on five hits and sent 12 batters to the plate in the inning. Tipton scored on an error for their first run on the inning to take a 4-0 lead. Then a RBI single by Luke Becker scored Logan Hoffman for a 5-0 lead. The bases were loaded when Ben Emrich drilled a two-out, bases clearing double scoring Nile Schuett, Kael Jauron and Luke Becker to extend the Tiger lead to 8-0. Emirch scored on a Mesick single for a 9-0 lead and Mesick would score on a Dylan Mente single to set the score at 10-0.
Durant would score the games final runs with single runs in the third and fifth and two in the sixth.
9-Run First Sends Tigers To Third Straight Win
TIPTON — Playing in their third game in as many days, the Tipton Tigers used a 9-run first inning to help in a 12-5 non-conference win over Lone Tree on Wednesday, June 27. The Tigers won their third game in a row and fourth game in their last five. The Tigers improved to 2-4 in six non-conference games this year.
The Tigers scored a season high run total in the first inning, plating nine runs and sending 14 batters to the plate. Tipton had eight hits in the opening inning. Quinten Mesick led off the inning with a triple and scored on a Dylan Mente single to tie the score at 1-1, two batters in. Mente stole second and scored on a Nile Schuett single. Logan Hoffman later scored on an error as did Kael Jauron. In between that, Schuett scored on Jauron’s single for a 5-1 lead. The Tigers would push four more runs across the plate.
Tipton led 9-5 heading to the bottom of the third when the Tigers scored a single run in each of the next three innings to extend their lead to 12-5.
Tipton used five pitchers in the game. Ben Emrich, Gavin Belitz, Bryce Deerberg, Elliott Cummins and Kayden Rezac pitched. Rezac was credited with the win after pitching three innings of relief. The five pitchers combined to give up eight hits, five runs and seven strikeouts.
The Tigers belted out 13 hits and had three players with three hits. Quinten Mesick was 3-for-5 and was a home run away from hitting for the cycle. He had two of his three hits in the 9-run first inning. Mesick had a single, double, triple and 2 RBI’s. Logan Hoffman was 3-for-3 with 2 RBI’s and Luke Becker was 3-for-4 with a double and 2 RBI’s.
Dylan Mente, Trent Pelzer, Nile Schuett and Kael Jauron all had hits in the game. Mente and Schuett each had 2 RBI’s and Cole Syring had one RBI.
The loss was the seventh loss in a row for Lone Tree. Harmon Miller took the loss after four innings of work. He gave up 12 runs on 13 hits and struck out two. Lone Tree was led at the plate by Brady Dauber who was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and 5 stolen bases.
Tigers Sweep White-Hot Comets To Get Back On Track
WEST LIBERTY — The Tigers traveled to West Liberty last Monday to play the upstart Comets in a doubleheader. The Comets are one of the surprising teams in the RVC this year and entered the games with a .500 record of 9-9 which is the best record they have had this late in the year for a while. There, the Tigers won two close ball games, winning game one 3-2 and game two, 6-3.
In game one, Tipton never trailed after the second inning. The Comets scored first with a run in the opening inning, but Tipton responded in the top of the second inning with three runs to take control of the game.
Logan Hoffman got the win after six innings of work. He pitched six innings and gave up seven hits and two runs. Hoffman struck out five Comets and walked two. Cole Syring pitched one-inning in relief.
Tipton had eight hits by eight different players. Dylan Mente, Trent Pelzer and Ben Emrich had RBI singled in the game.
In game two, Kael Jauron picked up his first varsity win this year in three starts this year. Jauron started and pitched 3 2/3 innings. He gave up two runs on two hits. He struck out one and walked three. Colby Kleppe pitched the final 3 1/3 innings and gave up one-run on three hits. He struck out two and walked three.
Tipton scored twice in the first and three times in the third to take a 5-0 lead. That lead would survive the Comets comeback attempt when they chipped away at the lead to set the score at 5-3 after six innings. The Tigers added an insurance run in the top of the seventh to set the score at 6-3.
Tipton got great production from their top-3 batters in the order - Quinten Mesick, Dylan Mente and Trent Pelzer. The trio each had two hits and combined to go 6-for-10 in the game with 3 runs scored and 3 stolen bases. Nile Schuett had a hit and 3 RBI’s while Luke Becker had a hit and RBI and Logan Hoffman had a RBI. Cole Syring also had a double.
