TIPTON — Wins have been hard to come by this season for the Tipton softball team. However, last week, the Tigers claimed win number five with an 8-7 game two win over Clinton. The Tigers have now won four more games than last season and saw their record swell to 5-17.
Late runs gave the Tigers an 8-7 victory in game two against Clinton. The Tigers rallied back from being down 7-1 going into the bottom of the fifth inning.
Clinton broke a scoreless game with a four-run top of the third to take an early lead. The RiverQueens broke through with runs after leaving a runner at second base in each of the first two innings. Clinton sent seven batters to the plate in the inning and had three hits in the inning.
Tipton scored their first run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Bryanna Simmermaker singled to lead off the inning and scored on a two-out RBI single by Keeli Claussen to set the score at 4-1.
Clinton appeared to take control of the game, scoring three runs in the top of the fifth to take a 7-1 lead.
Tipton chipped away at the score, scoring twice in the fifth to set the score at 7-3 after five. The Tigers added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth to get closer, at 7-5. Back-to-back RBI hits by Simmermaker and Grace Nichols accounted for the runs. After holding Clinton scoreless for the second straight inning in the seventh, Tipton won the game with a three-run seventh after sending six batters to the plate. The big hit came off the bat of senior Allie Ryan, who had a 2-run hit to tie the game at 7-7 and push across the winning run to give Tipton an 8-7 victory.
Allison Nash was the winning pitcher, getting her first varsity win. Nash pitched seven innings and gave up seven runs on 11 hits. She struck out three and walked one batter.
The Tigers had eight hits in the game. Grace Nichols was 2-for-4 with a RBI. Allie Ryan had a hit and 2 RBI’s while Nash, Bryanna Simmermaker, and Keeli Claussen each had hits and 1 RBI. Britney Ford had a hit and scored twice. Simmermaker also scored twice.
Tipton fell in game one, 12-1. Tipton trailed 5-1 after scoring their only run in the third inning. The RiverQueens would score seven unanswered runs to secure the win.
Morgan Wendel took the loss after working seven innings. She struck out five and walked one batter.
Tipton had eight hits in the game with three players getting multi-hit games. The Tigers first three batters in the order each had two hits (Britney Ford, Hailey Stewart, Laken Hermiston), and had six of those hits and combined to go 6-for-11 with a double and RBI. Hermiston had the double and RBI. Bryanna Simmermaker and Sydney Barton each had hits. Wendel also reached base via a walk.
13th ranked Comets too much for Tigers
WEST LIBERTY — The Tipton Tigers struggled in a doubleheader against class 3A No. 13 West Liberty last Monday to start a busy week of six games. The Tigers lost game one, 10-0 and game two, 11-1. Both games ended early due to the 10-run mercy rule. The losses were the third straight for Tipton.
In game one, West Liberty scored five runs in the first inning putting the Tigers in a tough spot. The Comets added four more runs in the bottom of the second to take a commanding 9-0 lead. The Comets scored their 10th run in the bottom of the fourth and the game ended early in the fifth.
Morgan Wendel took the loss after four innings of work. She struck out three, walked five and gave up six hits. Janey Gingerich got the win in five innings. She struck out four and didn’t walk a batter.
Tipton had only three hits in the game. Ashley Mente led Tipton, going 2-for-2. Grace Nichols added a single. Austyn Crees was 3-for-3 with two doubles and 2 RBI’s. Brittney Harned, Sailor Hall and Emma Martin all had two RBI’s.
In game two, Tipton fell 11-1 to drop both games to the Comets. In the game senior shortstop Ashley Mente was injured and had to leave the ball game. Later, it was determined that that injury would force her to miss the rest of the season.
The Tigers and Comets were scoreless after the first inning West Liberty put up four runs in the fourth inning to take a 6-0 lead. The Comets led 7-0 when the Tigers scored their only run in the top of the fifth. West Liberty ended the game by the 10-run mercy rule in the bottom of the fifth when they scored four runs, to set the score at 11-1.
Tipton had five hits in the game. Britney Ford led the Tigers offense, going 2-for-3. Hailey Stewart added a double while Laken Hermiston and Morgan Wendel each ahad hits. Wendel had a RBI and Keeli Claussen reached base via a walk. Morgan Wendel took the loss after working five innings. She gave up ten hits and struck out four batters.
Emma Martin was the winning pitcher. She struck out two and walked one batter. West Liberty had 13 hits led by Brittney Harned, Parker Werling and Brookelyn Harned who each had two hits.
Tigers Nearly Beat Top Ranked Durant In Game 2
DURANT — The Tipton softball team nearly sent shockwaves through the class 2A world last Thursday in Durant. Playing the second game of a doubleheader, where you lose 12-0 in game one, is tough enough as it is. However, Tipton hung in there, and though they lost game two, a 1-0 final score is not bad. The Wildcats won their 18th straight game with the doubleheader sweep.
In game two, Durant’s Jenna Lawson allowed only three hits to the Tigers in the second game to get the win. Lawson pitched a complete game, 7-inning shutout. She struck out seven and walked two batters. Tipton starter Morgan Wendel took the loss after six innings. She gave up four hits, one run and walked one batter.
Brooklyn Bullard was 2-for-3 to lead Durant batters. Hannah Happ and Kamryn Meyer each had hits. Meyer was credited with a RBI. Hailey Stewart was 2-for-3 and Sidney Barton had a single for the Tigers hits.
Durant scored the only run of the game. Hannah Happ walked to lead off the first inning. Happ stole second and moved to third on a groundout. Happ would score on a Tipton error on a ball hit by Kamryn Meyer. The Wildcats would lead 1-0 after the first inning. Durant stranded a runner at third in the first inning, the third, and fifth innings without plating a run.
Meyer retired the Tigers in order in the second, fourth and sixth innings. The Tigers advanced a runner to second base in the third and had the tying run at second with one out in the top of the seventh, but left them stranded.
In game one, Durant junior Kamryn Meyer pitched a perfect game and improved to 10-0 in conference games. Meyer needed four innings and 49 pitches for the perfect game. 39 went for strikes. Meyer struck out nine hitters.
Durant had a dozen hits off of Tiger starter Morgan Wendel. Jalyn Bullard was 3-for-3 with 2 RBI’s. Kamryn Meyer was 2-for-3 with 3 RBI’s and Paige Werthmann batted 2-for-3 with 2 RBI’s.
Durant broke open a close 2-0 after two innings with a nine-run third inning to set the score at 11-0. Durant added a single run in the fourth to end the game, 12-0.
