WILTON — The Wilton Beavers will get to enjoy week 9 a little more this week, knowing that they have a spot in the 2018 Class 1A playoffs. This came after Wilton’s 34-8 win last Friday at home over Columbus Junction. The Beavers improved to 7-1 overall and remained unbeaten in district play at 4-0. With one week remaining, and tiebreakers held over the other schools in the district, Wilton clinched a playoff spot as the district champions for District 5. The Beavers will host Van Buren this week to finish their regular season.
Wilton outgained Columbus Junction 305 yards to 84. The Beavers also had 15 first downs to the Wildcats six. The Beavers scored 30 points or more in their fourth game of the season in the win.
Wilton used three quarterbacks in the game. Starter Jerome Mays only played in the first half and threw for 12 yards on two completions. He had an interception. Senior Brock Hartley saw the most time under center in the game and passed for a career-high 109 yards on 7-of-16 attempts. He tossed two touchdowns and had one interception. Caleb Sawvell also played and completed half of his passes for 43 yards.
Collin McCrabb led Wilton in rushing, nearly rushing for over 100 yards, with 93 yards on 23 carries. He had two rushing touchdowns. Brian Stillman added 59 yards on seven carries. Cory Anderson had another good night catching the football. Anderson caught eight passes for 121 yards and two touchdowns. Anderson topped the 500-yard mark in receiving yards this season with his yardage output in the game.
Defensively, Wilton was led by Jared Townsend with 7 tackles while Brayton Wade had 5, and Trey Burnett also had 5 stops.
The Beavers defense held the Wildcats to one passing yard in the football game from senior quarterback Chance Colby. Colby completed only one pass in 11 attempts in the football game. Colby has only thrown one interception in eight games this season.
Colby rushed for a season-best 64 yards on 17 carries and scored the only Wildcat touchdown. Jose Cerezo rushed for 42 yards. Defensively, Will Schwab led four Columbus Junction players with double-digit tackle totals with 18 stops in the game. Columbus Junction fell to 0-4 in road games this season. Columbus Junction will conclude their 2018 season with a home game against Wapello Friday night.
Wilton led 14-0 at halftime. The Beavers scored first in the first quarter on their second possession of the game. Wilton went seven plays for 55 yards, all yards picked up by senior running back Collin McCrabb. McCrabb would score on a 3-yard run to set the score at 6-0.
Wilton took a 14-0 lead to halftime after McCrabb scored for the second time, this time from 1-yard out with 1:48 before halftime.
Wilton added two third-quarter touchdowns to the score to take a 28-0 lead to the final quarter. a Brock Hartley touchdown pass to Cory Anderson, a safety and a Hartley 7-yard touchdown accounted for the points in the quarter. Wilton scored their final touchdown of the game just over a minute into the final quarter, on another Hartley to Anderson touchdown pass to set the Beavers lead at 34-0.
