Knights Can’t Hang With Cougars, Fall 47-19 at Home

STANWOOD — The North Cedar football team had their work cut out for them last Friday at home, trying to slow down the Cascade Cougars. Cascade entered their road game at North Cedar with the second highest points scored total in class 1A District 4 and showed why they are a potent offensive club, scoring 47 points in a 47-19 victory at North Cedar last week. The Knights fell to 1-4 overall and 0-1 in district 4. Cascade improved to 1-0 in district 4 and 3-2 overall. The Cougars 47 points was the second time in three weeks that Cascade has scored over 45 points in a football game. Both were wins.

North Cedar had a little boost of their own entering the game after a 53-24 homecoming win in week four. The Knights began a tough stretch of games - Cascade at home, at state ranked West Branch, and state ranked Bellevue at home - with their game with the Cougars. The Knights have four more football games this season with home games on October 5 and 12.

Cascade scored the game's first points and led 20-7 at halftime. The Knights score came in the second quarter on an Ethan Sahr 12-yard touchdown pass to Gage Walshire. A Brody Hawtrey kick set the score at 13-7. Cascade would score late in the half to extend their lead to 20-7 at halftime.

Cascade pushed their lead to 34-7 after three quarters, scoring a touchdown rushing and one by passing.

Ethan Sahr’s second passing touchdown began the fourth quarter scoring. Sahr’s 17-yard scoring pass to Keon McCullough set the score at 34-13 Cougars. Cascade would then score all 13 of their fourth quarter points, including a 61-yard touchdown run to take a 47-13 lead. North Cedar would find the end zone one more time in before the game ended. Sahr passed for his third touchdown of the game, this one to Tyler Jackson for 14 yards.

Sahr passed for a career high three touchdowns in the game. The scoring passes were part of a 11-completion game for the senior quarterback. Sahr passed for 143 yards in the game and had no interceptions. Sahr now has 657 passing yards this season through five games and is 26 yards behind his total last year of 683 in nine games.

North Cedar rushed for 141 yards to add to their balanced offense attack in the game. A week after rushing for 507 yards, the Cougars bottled up the Knights ground game. Logan Thimmes led North Cedar rushers with 78 yards on 19 carries. Brody Hawtrey rushed for 65 yards on 16 carries. Both Thimmes and Hawtrey have topped 500 career rushing yards now in the past two weeks. Each hovered around 200 rushing yards last season and both are leading the ground attack this season.

Keon McCullough playing in his first game of the season made quite an impact. McCullough caught seven passes for 95 yards to lead North Cedar. Gage Walshire caught two passes for 27 yards. McCullough’s seven receptions vaulted him up the Knight receiving leaders and set his total receptions as tied for second on the team.

Defensively, North Cedar was led in tackles by Thimmes with 10, Jonathan Scheer with 7 and Caden Wendt with 6. Thimmes had two tackles for loss and a fumble recovery. Scheer also had a fumble recovery in the game.

North Cedar now turns their attention to West Branch. The Bears were upset last week at Bellevue 28-20 in a game between two, top-10 class 1A teams. The Bears are led by senior quarterback Beau Cornwell and junior Tanner Lukavsky and a host of wide receivers. Cornwell has passed for 1,066 yards and 12 touchdowns. Lukavsky has rushed for 560 yards and 8 touchdowns and Brett Schiele is the leading Bear receiver with 17 receptions for 277 yards and four touchdowns. Defensively, John Hatfield and Lukavsky lead the way with 28 tackles each.
