DURANT — The Durant Wildcat football won’t be able to fly under the radar much longer. Not after a dominating 56-6 win over Cardinal of Eldon last Friday on homecoming night. The Wildcats improved to 4-2 overall and 2-0 in class A district 6. The Wildcats and BGM are the only unbeaten district teams in the district and the Bears will come to Durant in week 8. Last Friday, the Wildcats exploded for 35 first quarter points to take control of the football game.

For the second straight game, Durant had two running backs over 100 yards. In the game, Drew DeLong rushed for 192 yards on 20 carries and Tristan Hughes rushed for 147 yards on 17 carries. In two district games, the Wildcats have rushed for 631 yards on 76 carries and average 8.6 yards her carry.

Durant senior quarterback Bryce Lafrenz passed for 237 yards on seven pass completions and had four touchdown passes. With those numbers, Lafrenz has topped the 1,000-yard/10-touchdown pass marks for the year. It is the second straight season he has thrown for over 1,000 yards and thrown for double digit touchdown passes. Last season, the passed for 1,361 yards and 14 touchdowns in his first season as a varsity starter. He is now 511 yards away from 3,000 career passing yards.

Lafrenz connected for three of his four touchdown passes with Mason Compton in the game. Compton continues to shine and show he is an elite reciever and top one in class A. Compton caught three passes for 197 yards. For the season, he has 785 receiving yards, a top total for any class statewide. He also had 35 receptions and is in the top-10 in all classes in touchdowns with 9.

Defensively, Cameron Ruggiero led Durant with 8 followed by Zac Badtram with 7, Will Lossi with 6 and Compton with 4.

Kade Chance led Cardinal in rushing with 60 yards on 13 carries. Maddux Jones completed six passes for 9 yards and Trey Albert and Kade Chance each had two receptions. Defensively, Cardinal was led in tackles by Dagisteno Shilling with 11 and Jevan Knights with 9.

Durant will travel to Highland Friday. The Huskies are ranked No. 10 in class A by Radio Iowa. It’s the first of two weeks where Durant will play a ranked team. The Widlcats week 8 foe, BGM, is ranked No. 5. Highland beat state ranked Pekin last Friday, 23-21. The Huskies are led by a tough quarterback in Trey Lasek. Lasek has passed for 643 yards and 8 touchdowns and rushed for 689 yards and 9 touchdowns. Receivers Cory Stewart and Mason McFarland each had three touchdowns catches. The Huskies are led on defense by Brady Hahn who has 67 tackles. Lasek also is a threat defensively with 5 interceptions this year for 127 return yards and a touddown.

Durant led 35-6 after the first quarter and cruised to the 50-point win. The Wildcats led 42-6 at halftime and the 35-point, mercy rule running clock was in effect the entire second half. Durant had six offensive possessions in the first quarter, and scored touchdowns on five of those. All of the touchdowns were of 25 or more yards.

On their first offensive play of the game, Durant running back Tristan Hughes rushed 57 yards for the games first points and a 7-0 lead, 15 seconds into the game. After Cardinal’s first possession, Bryce Lafrenz and Mason Compton connected for a 31-yard touchdonw pass to set the score at 14-0.

Cardinal scored their only touchdown of the game on the ensuing possession. There, Trey ALbert rushed for a 75-yard touchdown run to cut the Wildcats lead to 14-6 with 5:43 left in the opening quarter.

From there, the Wilcats would score three times in the final 5:43 of the quarter all on Bryce Lafrenz touchdown passes. Mason Compton scored on touchdown passes of 91 and 75 yards and Jake Willkomm scored on a 27-yard pass. Hughes’ second touchdown run of the first half extended the Wildcats lead in the second quarter 42-6. That would be the score at halftime.
