CEDAR RAPIDS - The Tipton swimming team placed fourth at last Saturday’s Cedar Rapids Washington Invitational on Saturday, October 6. There, the Tigers scored 342 points, their most at an invitational this season. The team finish is the highest for a Tipton team under head coach Whitney Gehrs. The Tigers competed against nine other teams, all junior varsity squads, but teams that make up the biggest swim teams in Eastern Iowa.

The Tigers won five events at the meet including two relay events. Those relay wins came from the Tigers 200-yard medley relay and the 200-yard freestyle relay. Tipton freshman Rhyan Hoefler collected a pair of individual wins and Britney Ford claimed the other Tipton individual event victory.

The Tipton lineup looked a little different as the original lineup reflected the mid-meet departure of THS band students who had their state competition in Muscatine later in the day. The band kids were to leave after the 200-freestyle relay event, however, during the first half of the meet, the band contest was cancelled due to weather.

In individual events, Hoefler won both the 500-yard freestyle and the 100-yard butterfly. Hoefler won the 500-yard freestyle in 5:41.52 swimming her best time since breaking the school record in the Tigers season opener (5:34.15). Hoefler won the 100-yard butterfly in 1:06.45.

Also in individual events, Ford won the 100-yard breaststroke after not being in the event originally. She scratched in an individual event and was inserted in the breaststroke, an event where she has not lost in a dual meet this year. In Cedar Rapids, the same held true. Ford won her heat and captured the event in a time of 1:15.67, her best time since posting a 1:15.48 at the Davenport Central meet on Monday, September 17.

Pleasant Valley won the meet with a team score of 468. The Tigers were one of only four of the ten teams to score over 340 team points at the meet. Cedar Rapids Kennedy was second with 451 points and Iowa City West was third with 428 points.

Tipton won two of the three relay events. Tipton’s 200-yard medley relay team of Ali Anderson, Ford, Maddie Swick and Zoe Stonebraker won in a time of 2:01.12, posting the third best time in the event this fall. The Tigers 200-yard freestyle team of Anderson, Swick, Stonebraker and Hoefler won in a time of 1:49.02 which was a season best time in that event.

In other individual events, Zoe Stonebraker was the runner-up in the 100-yard freestyle in 1:00.51 and fourth in the 200-yard IM in 2:32.51. Ali Anderson was the runner-up in the 100-yard backstroke in 1:07.84. That time was the second fastest this season in the event by a Tipton swimmer. Maddie Swick collected two third place finishes, one in the 200-yard freestyle in 2:14.66 and another in the 100-yard butterfly in 1:06.78. Swick’s time in the 200-freestyle was the third fastest on the Tigers team this year.

Tipton swam at Williamsburg Monday and will be back in the pool on Monday, October 15 when they host Fairfield in their last regular season meet that starts at 5:00 p.m. The Tigers will then prepare for their regional meet on Saturday, October 27.
