Knights Fall 52-14 To 6th Ranked Bears

  WEST BRANCH — The North Cedar Knight football team had a tall task at West Branch last Friday. The 6th ranked Bears (Associated Press Poll) lost their first game of the season in week 5 at Bellevue, and looked to get back on track against the Knights. Get back on track and to winning ways they did. West Branch overwhelmed the Knights by halftime to take a 35-6 lead and cruise to a 52-14 victory in week two of the district football season. North Cedar fell to 1-5 overall and 0-2 in district play.

  West Branch had 16 first downs and 463 yards of total offense in the game. North Cedar had 18 first downs and 230 yards of total offense. The Bears scored over 50 points for the second time in three weeks and have not scored less than 20 points in all six games this season. The Bears improved to 5-1 overall and 2-0 in district play.

  Beau Cornwell passed for nearly 200 yards for the Bears, with 196 on 10-for-11 completions. He had four touchdowns and one interceptions. Tanner Lukavsky rushed for 149 yards and a touchdown and Wyatt Goodale caught three passes for 102 yards and two touchdowns. Bear senior Brett Schiele had a big game. He caught four passes for 69 yards and a touchdown, rushed for 28 yards on two carries and scored two special teams touchdowns on a 74-yard punt return and an 82-yard kick-off return.

  Ethan Sahr passed for 89 yards and a touchdown in the game on ten completions. Brody Hawtrey rushed for 101 yards and Brody Hawtrey caught four passes for 24 yards. Keon McCullough caught a 16-yard touchdown pass. Defensively, North Cedar was led by Tyler Thurston with 6, Logan Thimmes with 5, and Brody Hawtrey with 4 tackles.

  West Branch led 14-0 after the first quarter on two touchdown passes from Beau Cornwell. Cornwell connected with Wyatt Goodale for 19 yards and Brett Schiele for 21 yards for the points.

  North Cedar scored their only touchdown of the first half to cut the Bear lead to 14-6 after a 16-yard touchdown pass from Ethan Sahr to Keon McCullough. The PAT was blocked by the Bears. West Branch then scored 21 unanswered points from three touchdowns to take a 35-6 halftime lead.

  West Branch extended their lead to 52-6 after a 17-point third quarter. North Cedar scored the games final points in the final quarter. A Logan Thimmes 1-yard touchdown run set the final score at 52-14.

  North Cedar will play at home each of the next two weeks. This week, the Knights host class 1A No. 3 Bellevue. The Comets are unbeaten at 6-0 overall and 2-0 in district play. The Knights will then host Dyersville-Beckman on Friday, October 12 before finishing the regular season on the road at Northeast.
