Tigers Clinch Winning Record WIth West Burlington Win

TIPTON — The Tipton football team gave head coach Joe Zeutenhorst his first winning regular season last Friday after their 37-24 win at West Burlington in district play. The Tigers improved to 5-2 overall and 2-1 in district play with the win. The Tigers have two more regular season games and return home this week to play Louisa-Muscatine. The Tigers travel to West Liberty in week 9. The Tigers got a big rebound victory in week 7 after falling to Mount Vernon in week 6 in a lopsided loss. The Tigers are very much in the playoff hunt. If the Tigers win out they will be district champions. That didn’t seem possible after last weeks loss at Mount Vernon. In that scenario, Tipton, West Liberty and Mount Vernon would tie at 4-1 in district play. To break the tie, the RPI would be used with the highest ranked RPI team getting the district title. After last week’s games, district RPI is Tipton 15th, West Liberty 21st, and Mount Vernon 33rd. The margin of the score has no bearing on who is in and who is not. Thus Tipton’s loss to Mount Vernon 68-8 is viewed the same as the Mustangs 53-21 win at Camanche Friday.

Tipton head football coach Joe Zeutenhorst said that he was not pleased with his team’s play overall, but a win is a win.

“It’s nice to clinch a winning record for the regular season. Winning feels good and people enjoy seeing us win,” he said. “We are feeling good about being 5-2 and not 2-5. We wanted to be 7-0, but it didn’t fall that way,” he said.

“We could have played better though. Yes, we did have some turnovers, and we did enough to score points, but we could have been more physical and we will work on that this week,” he said.

The Tigers held West Burlington scoreless in the first half. During that time, the Tigers scored 24 points to lead 24-0 at halftime. Tipton scored the game’s first points on a 1-yard touchdown run by Connor Hermiston.

Tipton scored three times in the second quarter. After each touchdown, the Tigers tried for a two-point conversion and did not convert any of the attempts. Still, the Tigers led 24-0 at halftime.

Tipton extended their lead to 12-0 early in the second quarter on a Lake Anderson 2-yard run. A 23-yard touchdown pass from Blake Wilkins to John Crowley gave the Tigers an 18-0 lead. Tipton’s last touchdown came from Wilkins who scored on an 8-yard run to extend their lead to 24-0.

West Burlington flipped the script on the Tigers in the second half, holding the football for most of the third quarter. West Burlington scored their first points of the game on a Tanner Snodgrass 30-yard scoring pass to Riley Walker and after the two-point conversion, the score was 24-8.

Tipton responded and scored quickly with a short 4-yard Lake Anderson run. The PAT kick by Frank Bierman was no good, but the score remained 30-8 Tigers. West Burlington didn’t leave the third quarter without adding another touchdown, this one on a Snodgrass 1-yard run to set the score at 30-16 going to the final quarter.

Each team traded fourth-quarter scores to get the final to 37-24. Tipton quarterback Blake Wilkins passed for his second touchdown, in the fourth quarter, this time to Frank Bierman for an 8-yard score. Bierman added the extra point for a 37-16 lead. Later, West Burlington got a 20-yard touchdown pass from Anthony Hoffman to Rylie Koenig and after the two-point conversion, the score stood at 37-24. That would be the final score as the Tigers picked up a key district 5 wins.

The Tigers had 364 yards of total offense in the game on 64 plays and 18 first downs. Logan Stolte rushed for a team-high 79 yards on 11 carries and Lake Anderson rushed for 69 yards on 19 carries. The Tigers lead district 5 teams in rushing yards as a team with 2,111. The Tigers also hold a nearly 200-yard margin over Mount Vernon in leading district teams in rushing in district games with 920 yards. Stolte is second in the district in rushing with 822 yards.

Blake Wilkins passed for 63 yards on three completions and passed for two touchdowns. John Crowley caught two passes for 55 yards and a touchdown to lead Tipton.

West Burlington had 189 yards of total offense on 53 yards and 10 first downs, most of that coming in the third quarter. Tanner Snodgrass rushed for 145 yards on 24 carries and passed for 30 yards and a touchdown in the game. Brady Oleson had two receptions.

Defensively, Tipton was led in tackles by Dylan Mente with 11, Nile Schuett with 8, Skyler Harroun with 7 and John Crowley with 6. Mente had a sack and a tackle for loss and Connor Hermiston had an interception in the game.

West Burlington was led in tackles by Snodgrass with 20. Austin Mixler had 15, Drew Chiprez had 14 and Rylie Koenig 12.

Tipton will host Louisa-Muscatine this Friday in their last home game of the season. The Falcons come to town with a record of 3-4 overall and 1-2 in district play. The Falcons beat West Burlington 20-0 but lost to Camanche 33-22, two teams the Tigers have beaten in district play. The Falcons have shut out two opponents this season.

Louisa-Muscatine offense starts and stops with quarterback Chase Kruse who has thrown for 651 yards and 7 touchdowns and leads L-M in rushing with 789 yards and 8 touchdowns. Three other Falcon running backs have rushed for over 300 yards. Two Falcon receivers have over 200 yards with Cody Calvelage having 235 yards on 10 catches and Brock Jeambey having 11 catches for 211 yards. Karson Cantrell also has 10 catches for 141 yards. All three each had two touchdown receptions.
Defensively, L-M is led by Calvelage with 83 tackles and Kruse with 65. Three different Falcons have interceptions and four different players have a fumble recovery.
