Tigers Humbled In Road Loss at Mount Vernon

MOUNT VERNON — On paper, Tipton’s week 6 game with Mount Vernon offered the best game in class 2A district 5. The Tigers, who held the No. 9 ranking in 2A by the Des Moines Register and the No. 11 AP ranking, against the always dangerous Mustangs led by former Wilton football coach Lance Pedersen. The Tigers were 4-1 after five games and 1-0 in district play, the co-leaders in a logjam with West Liberty and Louisa-Muscatine. Mount Vernon came into the football game 1-4, after playing a tough non-district schedule.

The game ended up being a one-sided contest as Mount Vernon overwhelmed the Tigers with an avalanche of first-half points, one their way to a 68-8 win.

“They took the momentum early and we couldn’t ever get it back,” said Tipton football coach Cole Goodenow.

Goodenow was serving as the acting head coach for the Tigers after head coach Joe Zeutenhorst was suspended after the Tigers week 5 game with Camanche. Zeutenhorst will return to the team this week and be on the sidelines for the Tigers road contest at West Burlington Friday.

“They are a good football team. They have to win out to have a shot at the playoffs and we got their best effort,” he said.

“We have to get back to work and get focused on West Burlington. We are going to move forward together,” said Goodenow.

The ballgame featured the top-2 running backs in district 5 in Mount Vernon senior Paul Ryan and Tipton senior Logan Stolte. The two did not disappoint. Ryan rushed for 155 yards on 12 carries and had two touchdowns. Graham Bradbury added 60 yards on 12 carries and a touchdown.

Stolte rushed for 138 yards on 25 carries and a touchdown. Lake Anderson added 19 years on seven carries for the Tigers.

Mustang quarterback Brady Ketchum is statistically a top district 5 in most stats. He completed all but one pass in the game, going 12-for-13 for 185 yards and three touchdowns. Ketchum now has 990 yards for the season and is ten yards from a 1,000-yard season with three games left in the season.

Tipton kicked-off to start the game, and on the return, the Mustangs used some trickery. The player catching the kick, started one way and flipped the football to Zach Baker going the other way. Baker then had a big cutback lane and found it and in all darted 94 yards for the games first touchdown, moments into it. It would be the first of five first-quarter scores for Mount Vernon. The Mustangs would score on a 33-yard interception return, two Paul Ryan touchdown runs and a fumble recovery returned for a touchdown as the quarter was drawing to a close. The Tigers trailed 33-0 after the first quarter. Mount Vernon piled on more points in the second quarter with 21 more points to take a 54-0 halftime lead. A Baker touchdown run and two touchdown pass by Ketchem accounted for the points.

Mount Vernon’s halftime lead activated the running 35-point mercy rule running clock to start the second half. A Ketchum pass to Baker, their second scoring pass connection, put the Mustangs up 61-0 after three quarters. Mount Vernon extended their lead to 68-0 on a Graham Bradbury 2-yard run. The Tigers got on the scoreboard to avoid the shutout in the fourth quarter, on a Logan Stotle 1-yard run.

Tipton ran 70 plays for 182 yards, their lowest of the season for offensive output. Tipton had 10 first downs in the game. The Tigers had trouble in the game converting third downs. The Tigers, normally steady on third down conversions, were just 4-for-16 for the game in those opportunities.

Mount Vernon ran 42 plays, only six in the first quarter, and had 456 yards of total offense. The Mustangs had 17 first downs.

Defensively, Stolte led Tipton in tackles with 6 while Frank Bierman, Skylar Harroun and Nile Schuett each had 5. Mount Vernon was led by Joe Hunter and Andrew Louwagie who each had 13 tackles.

Tipton will turn its attention to West Burlington, their week 7 opponent. The Tigers have never played West Burlington in football. West Burlington has had a rough season and will have a record of 1-5 coming into the game. Tipton will bring their 4-2 record and look to inch over the .500 mark in district play. West Burlington lost 20-0 to Louisa-Muscatine to open district play and lost at West Liberty last week. This will be their first home game since September 14. They will host Mount Vernon in week 8.
