TIPTON — The Tipton Tigers are right where they want to be at this point of the season. After falling twice this season in games to traditional powers Mount Vernon and West Branch, the Tigers are in a position to make the playoffs with a win Friday at West Liberty. The Tigers claimed their sixth victory of the season last Friday, a 32-16 win over Louisa-Muscatine to improve to 6-2 and 3-1 in district 5 play. The Tigers are tied for second with Mount Vernon in district play at 3-1 with West Liberty on top at 4-0. A win Friday at West Liberty would create a three-way tie for the district title. Under the new playoff system this year, district champions reach the playoffs. How that sorts itself out is yet to be determined. The Tigers now however, a win and they are in.

Last Friday, the Tigers racked up 412 yards of total offense against the Falcons with 352 yards rushing and 60 yards passing. It was the fifth time this season in eight games that Tipton has rushed for over 300 yards in a game. The Tigers doubled the yards that the Falcons had (166) and had more first downs that Louisa-Muscatine with 18 to the 11 for the Falcons.

Tipton opened the scoring on their first offensive play of the game. Running back Connor Hermiston slashed through the Falcon defense for a 62-yard touchdown run. After a Frank Bierman PAT, Tipton led 7-0. The Falcons would answer the Tigers score later in the first quarter and take an 8-7 lead after a Cody Calvelage 7-yard run and Karson Cantrell 2-point conversion run. The Falcons would extend their led to 16-7 in the second quarter on a Chase Kruse 6-yard run and a Brock Jeambey 2-point conversion run.

That would be it for the Falcons in the scoring department though. The Tigers would use 25 unanswered points over the final two and a half quarters to take the 32-16 win.

Tipton scored twice in the second quarter to grab a 21-16 halftime lead. Touchdown runs by Lake Anderson for 1-yard and John Crowley for 14 yards accounted for the Tiger points in the quarter.

Tipton would extend their lead to 27-16 by the end of the third quarter. Lake Anderson’s second rushing touchdown of the game, a 7-yard score gave the Tigers a two score lead going to the final quarter. In the fourth quarter, Logan Stolte put the game out of reach, scoring from three yards out to set the score at its final, 32-16.

The Tigers scored over 30 points for the fourth time in eight games with the win. Blake Wilkins passed for 60 yards on 3-of-5 completions. He threw no interceptions for the third time in the last four games. Frank Bierman caught two passes for 41 yards and Nile Schuett had a catch for 19 yards.

Tipton had two running backs over 100 yards in the game. Logan Stotle got closer to the 1,000-yard mark for the season. He rushed for 158 yards on 20 carries. He now had 980 yards. Only two Tipton running backs in the last ten years have gone over 1,000 yards in a season. They were Chandler Harden and most recently Koby Johnston, two of the all-time best in yards for a single season as the Tiger feature back. Connor Hermiston also rushed for over 100 yards, finishing with 132 yards on 12 carries.

Defensively, Tipton came up big. The Tigers intercepted two passes with John Crowley and Skyler Harroun each getting a turnover. Harroun also had a fumble recovery. Dylan Mente and

Frank Bierman each had two quarterback sacks and Chance Koch and Hermiston each had one sack.

Dylan Mente led Tipton in tackles with 11 while Frank Bierman and Chance Koch each had 7, and Skyler Harroun had 6.

Tipton will play at West Liberty Friday night. The Comets are 5-3 overall, but 4-0 in district play. The key win they have is a week five home win over Mount Vernon 27-9. If the Comets win the district, that victory will go a long way. West Liberty’s defense has come up big in district games. The Comets have not allowed any of their district foes to score over 10 points in any of the four games, including one shutout. On the other side, the Comets have scored 35 or more points in three of their four district wins. In the other district win, they scored 27 points.

Senior quarterback Seth Feldman has passed for 1,021 yards and 14 touchdowns. He also is the leading rusher for the Comets with 485 yards and 9 touchdowns. Coy Ruess and Gabriel Melendez also have nearly 200 yards rushing. Lake Newton is a big play threat with 18 catches for 398 yards and a 22.1-yard per catch average. Talen Dengler has the more receptions with 21 and tied for the most touchdowns with 4. Defensively, West Liberty is led by Will Esmoil with 71 tackles and Spencer Daufeldt with 62 tackles and 17 tackles for loss. The Comets swipe at the football a lot as they have recovered 14 fumbles this season.
