WILTON — The Wilton Beavers entered district play last Friday looking to get back on the winning track after falling to state ranked Benton in week 4. Wilton welcomed Sigourney-Keota to town to begin District 5 play. There, Wilton won by a 35-0 shutout on homecoming night. The Beavers picked up a rare shutout win over the Savages. The last time Sigourney-Keota was shutout was in the 2016 playoffs in a 49-0 loss to Pella Christian. The last district shutout Sigourney-Keota suffered was a 19-0 loss at home to Iowa City Regina in week 9 of the 2013 season on October 25. That season the Savaged also were shutout at home 23-0 at the hands of Eddyville-Blakesburg.

The victory sets the Beavers record at 4-1 and 1-0 in district 5. The Savages fall to 0-1 in district 5 and 3-2 overall.

Wilton will travel to Wapello for their first road district game on Friday. The Beavers will have to slow down district 5 leading rusher Ricky Pforts. Pforts has 664 yards, 6 touchdowns and has a per carry average of 6.3 yards. The Beavers will counter with lead running back Collin McCrabb and quarterback Jerome Mays. McCrabb has 492 yards, 2 touchdowns and a 5.5-yard average while Mays had 446 yards, 7 touchdowns and a 5.2-yard average.

Mays had a big game last year in Wilton’s 38-13 win at Wapello. Mays passed for 173 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 98 yards on 21 carries and had two touchdowns. Current Wilton receivers Brock Hartley and Cory Anderson each had over 70 receiving yards and a touchdown in that game.

Wapello enters the game on a two-game losing streak and lost at Mediapolis last Friday 34-7 to open district play. Wapello also lost to Durant and West Branch. The Indians beat Northeast by eight points, an opponent that Wilton beat 50-8. Wapello’s other win came at Louisa-Muscatine to start the 2018 season last month.

Wilton had 386 yards of total offense in the football game with 142 passing and 244 rushing yards. Jerome Mays passed for 142 yards on nine completions and had three touchdowns. With the pass yards, Mays topped the 500-yard mark for the season and has passed for over 100 yards in three of the five Wilton games.

Collin McCrabb rushed for 108 yards on 11 carries. He has rushed for over 100 yards in four of the Five Beavers games. Mays added 92 yards on the ground. Cory Anderson had a big game for the Beavers, catching a season high six passes for 118 yards and three touchdowns. He now has over 20 receptions on the year and over 200 receiving yards.

Defensively, Brock Hartley and Charles Martin led Wilton with 10 tackles each. Jared Townsend and McCrabb each had 8 tackles. Wilton had five quarterback sacks and six tackles for loss in the football game.

Wilton came out locked in from the start. The Beavers went on defense first and stuffed the first Sigourney-Keota drive, forcing a punt. Wilton wasted little time, marching down the field and scoring the game’s first points on a Jerome Mays 31-yard touchdown pass to Cory Anderson. After a Brock Hartley PAT Wilton led 7-0, three minutes into the game.

The Wilton defense forced another S-K punt. Wilton would set up their second drive at their own 38 and used two big plays to score again. Wilton would scored points on two of the three drives they had after the punts. On first and ten at the 38, Mays handed off to McCrabb who bolted 56 yards down the field to the S-K 6-yard line setting up a first and goal situation. McCrabb was so quick down the sideline, the S-K defense could not catch up other than two defensive backs that made the touchdown saving tackle. On the next play, Wilton scored a touchdown. Mays bobbled the snap, but recovered and calmly found receiver Cory Anderson in the back of the endzone for a touchdown. After a Brock Hartley PAT Wilton led 7-0, three minutes into the game. Wilton would force the Savages to punt after each of their first three possessions. Wilton would carry the 14-0 lead into halftime.

Wilton put the game away in the second half, outscoring the Savages 21-0 in the second half. Wilton scored 14 third quarter points and added another touchdown in the fourth quarter. A Jerome Mays 63-yard touchdown pass to Cory Anderson with 9:43 put Wilton up 21-0, early in the third. Later, Mays scored for Wilton on a 30-yard touchdown run to extend the Beavers lead to 28-0 with 6:53 left in the third quarter. Wilton would seal the game with a Mays 7-yard scoring run a minute into the final quarter, setting the score at 35-0 and starting the 35-point mercy rule, running clock for the rest of the game.
