DURANT - It took four games this year for the rst Durant baseball win to come. The Wildcats came into their doubleheader with Mid-Prairie last Thursday, 0-2 after falling twice at West Branch. The Wildcats beat Mid-Prairie 5-3 and lost 12-7 in nine innings in the two games.
Ben Orr was the winning pitcher for Durant in their 5-3 win. Orr pitched six innings and allowed only three runs while scattering six hits. Orr struck out three and walked six batters. Drew DeLong pitched one- inning of scoreless relief. He struck out one and walked two.
Mid-Prairie scored twice in the top of the second to take a 2-0 lead. The score stayed the same until the bottom of the third inning when Durant pushed three runs across the plate to grab a 3-2 lead. Mid-Prairie tied the game at 3-3 with a run in the top of the fth, but Durant retook the lead 5-3 with a 2-run fth. Neither team would score again in the contest.
Durant had eight hits in the game and stole nine bases in the game. Nate Dierickx and Ben Orr each had two stolen bases in the game. Nathan Hultquist had two of the three walks issued to the Wildcats. Durant had eight hits in the game. Orr was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. DeLong had a double and Drake Schlangoski had an RBI single. Keagan Head, Lucas Callison and Tevin Miller each had hits in the game.
Durant scored a season-high seven runs in their 12-7 loss to the Golden Hawks. Durant used three pitchers in the game. Brendan Paper started and went four innings and struck out nine batters. He gave up two runs on two hits and walked three. Ethan Gast took the loss in 3 1/3 innings of relief work. He gave up six runs on ve hits and struck out two. Nate Dierickx also pitched in the game.
Durant scored rst with two runs in the bottom of the rst and added a single run in the second to take a 3-0 lead. Mid-Prairie scored twice in the top of the third inning to cut Durant’s lead to 3-2. Durant surrendered the lead in the top of the sixth inning and trailed 6-4. The Wildcats responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning to retake the lead 7-6. Mid-Prairie would tie the game with a run in the top of the seventh to send the game to extra innings. The Golden Hawks would put the game away with a ve-run top of the ninth to secure the 12-7 win. Durant had 10 hits in the game, all singles. Ben Orr and Nate Dierickx were each 3-for-5 with an RBI in the game. Keagan Head had two hits while Jake Willkomm and Drew De- Long each had hits. Durant had nine stolen bases in back-to-back games. Willkomm had ve steals and reached base three times by walk. Durant improved to 1-3 overall and 1-3 in the River Valley Conference. The Wildcats had three games canceled or postponed last week. Durant was to travel to Anamosa on Tuesday, May 28, but the weather intervened. Then, last week’s home Durant tournament where Alburnett and Easton Valley were to come in to play, backed out and the tournament was lost. This week, Durant hosts West Liberty and travels to Bellevue Tuesday before playing North Cedar at the University of Iowa Duane Banks Stadium. The Wildcats will return home Friday to play a varsity doubleheader against Springville.
