TIPTON — For the rst time in over a decade, a Tipton Tiger baseball team has defeated one from Iowa City Regina. Not just once, but twice. The Tigers upended the Regals last Thursday at home, picking up their first RVC wins of the season. Tipton beat Regina 4-2 in the rst game and 1-0 in the second game. The Tigers got complete games from pitchers Luke Becker and Cole Syring in the wins.
Tipton entered the games 0-2 in the conference after falling twice at top-ranked Wilton to open the RVC portion of their schedule. The Tigers held a
1-3 overall record. Regina, like many other teams in eastern Iowa, had played only twice due to weather-related issues caused by late spring storms. Tipton and Regina battled for control of game one in the rst innings of the rst game. Each team scored a run in the opening inning, setting the score at 1-1. Tipton’s run scored on an error. Dylan Mente walked to lead o the rst inning, advanced to second on a ground out and moved to third base on a passed ball. Regina took a 2-1 lead after two innings.
That score would hold until the bottom of the fourth inning. There, the Tigers sent seven batters to the plate and scored three runs to take a 4-2 lead.
Luke Becker pitched a complete game to lead Tipton. Becker gave up two runs, struck out six and walked one batter. Becker retired eight Regals in a row from the third thru fifth innings.
Tipton collected seven hits in the game by seven di erent players. Cole Syring and Kael Jauron each had RBI hits. Ja- cob Tischuk had the other Tip- ton RBI. Dylan Mente, Trent Pelzer, Nile Schuett, Connor Hermiston, and Jack Boldt each had hits in the game. Jauron and Mente each had stolen bases and each reached base via walks.
Alex Meister pitched well but took the loss for the Regals. Meister struck out ve Tigers and walked two over 5 1/3 innings. He gave up four runs on six hits. Adam Connell pitched in relief. Regina had four hits in the game by four di erent players. Chase Becker had a double and RBI and stole three bases to lead Regina. Prescott Arendt had an RBI in the game.
Tipton sophomore Cole Syring turned in his best performance of his career to date to help put the Tigers in position to win game two. Syring pitched the rst shutout of his career in just his fth career start. Syring scattered seven hits, struck out ve and walked two batters in the game. The victory was his rst of the season and lowered his ERA of 3.06 in 16 innings pitched. Syring leads THS with 16 innings pitched and has now logged 13 combined innings in his last two starts.
Chase Becker took the loss after working six innings. He gave up two hits and one earned run in the game. He struck out nine Tigers and walked three.
Tipton had only two hits off of Regal starter Chase Becker. Connor Hermiston and Cole Syring each had singles. Dyland Mente had the Tigers only RBI. Tipton drew three walks, one each for Mente, Jacob Tischuk and Jack Boldt. Kayden Rezac courtesy ran and had a run scored and stolen base.
Regina had two players with multi-hit games. Declan McCoy was 2-for-3 and Joey Molony was also 2-for-3 in the game. Regina did not have any extra-base hits in the game. Syring irted with trouble the whole game. After getting the Regals out in order in the rst inning, Regina had a runner in scoring position in each of the final six innings including three straight innings with the tying run at third from the fourth thru sixth innings. The Tigers defense came up big as plays were being made to preserve the shutout.
Tipton scored their only run in the bottom of the second inning. Regal starter Chase Becker has really good velocity on his pitches and Tipton’s rally started with two outs. Becker struck out two in the second by giving up a single to Cole Syring and back-to-back walks to Jacob Tischuk and Jack Boldt. Tipton senior catcher Dylan Mente then walked with the bases loaded to plate the rst and what would turn out to be the only run of the ball game. Tipton had a chance to plate another run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Connor Hermiston led o with a single and reached second on a throwing error. He advanced to third base on a passed ball. Becker settled down, however, striking out the next three Tiger batters to end the threat.
