JESUP - The North Cedar Knights began the 2019 season 4-1. With one more victory this season, North Cedar would equal their best win total of ve games for a season reached in three of the past ve seasons. The Knights went 2-1 in three games at the Jesup Tournament on Saturday, May 25. The Knights beat Denver 15-1 in four in- nings, North Tama 16-6 in ve innings and lost to Vinton-Shellsburg 3-0. The games were the rst weekend tournament games this summer sea- son for North Cedar. The Knights will play at the Springville Tournament on June 8.
North Cedar had a great start to a three-game day at the Jesup tournament as eighth grader Alyssa He e nger pitched a one-hit gem in the Knights 15-1 win over Denver in four innings. He e nger earned her second win of the season to improve to 2-0. She struck out six, walked one and gave up one run on one hit.
North Cedar had six hits in the game and drew 11 walks. Alyssa Barnhart was 2-for-3 with a double and three runs scored. She also had three stolen bases and had a walk. Kendall Smith was 1-for-2 but reached base on two walks. She stole two bases and scored three times. Kassidie Galloway and Katelyn Jackson each had two stolen bases in the game. Galloway, Jenna Syring and Sam Koth each had hits in the game. Galloway drove in two runs. Jenna Syring had 3 RBI’s, while Katie Thompson, Kayla Syring and Katelyn Jackson each had 1 RBI. North Cedar led 1-0 after the rst inning and 3-0 after the second inning. North Cedar broke the game open with a four-run third to take a 7-0 lead. After Denver pushed a run across the plate in the fourth, North Cedar responded with eight runs in the bottom of the inning to end the game early.
North Cedar got their second win of the tournament, a 16-6 win in ve innings, over North Tama to improve to 4-0. North Cedar scored runs in bunches in the game, putting up three or more runs in four of the ve innings in the game.
North Cedar led 3-0 after the rst inning and after a 3-run third, led 6-0. North Tama scored three runs in the top of the fourth to cut the Knights lead in half at 6-3. The Knights took control of the game in their half of the fourth inning, scoring 6 runs to take a 12-3 lead. North Cedar would end the game with a four-run fourth to take a 16-6 lead and held North Tama scoreless in the top of the fth inning.
North Cedar had nine hits in the game. Kassidie Galloway and Katie Thompson each had two hits in three at-bats in the game. Galloway had a double, 2 RBI’s and scored three times. Thompson had 3 RBI’s and scored twice. Katelyn Jackson had a RBI single and scored a run. Alyssa Barn- hart, Alyssa He e nger and Emma Boleyn each had hits in the game.
Kendall Smith was the winning pitcher with a ve-inning complete game. She struck out six, walked three and gave up six runs on six hits. At the plate, Smith had a hit, a RBI and scored three times. North Cedar drew ten walks in the game. Barnhart had three walks and Smith two walks.
North Cedar had seven hits in their loss to Vin- ton-Shellsburg 3-0. Alyssa He e nger was the losing pitcher after working six innings and striking out seven. She gave up seven hits that led to three runs and walked two batters.
V-S broke a scoreless tie in the fourth inning, taking a 2-0 lead. Alyssa Barnhart was 2-for-4 to lead Knight batters. Kendall Smith, Katelyn Jackson, Kayla Syring, Katie Thompson, and Sam Koth each had hits.
Northeast Rebels Spoil Home Opener For Knights
LOWDEN — North Cedar rode into their home-opening games last Thursday 4-1 and looking to surpass their best win totals over the past few seasons of ve games, with wins over rival Northeast. It didn’t happen. The Knights scored 13 runs combined in the two games against the Rebels but lost both games by scores of 10-7 and 13-6. The Rebels have started the season 6-2 in their rst eight games.
In game one, Northeast put up three runs in the top of the rst inning to lead 3-0. Those runs were the rst of four straight innings with runs scored for the Rebels in a 10-7 win. North Cedar trailed 8-0 after the fourth inning, but the Knights exploded for 7 runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to cut the Rebels lead to one, 8-7. North- east scored twice in the top of the seventh to get a three-run advantage.
Alexis Ehlers was the winning pitcher after seven innings of work. She struck out ve, walked two and gave up seven runs. Four Rebels had multi-hit games. The Rebels rst three hitters in their order - Neveah Hildebrandt, Ehlers, and Man- gelsen combined to go 8-for-13 with 4 RBI’s, 6 runs scored, and 4 stolen bases. Hildebrandt and Ehlers each had three hits and Mangelsen had two. Abby Boyer also had two hits with a double and RBI.

In game two, North Cedar fell behind 1-0 after the first, and a 6-run top of the second inning for the Knights gave the Rebels a 7-0 lead. North Cedar responded with a ve-run third to trim the Rebels lead to 7-5 after three innings in the 13-6 loss.

Knights Open Season With Sweep Over Bellevue Comets
BELLEVUE — The North Cedar Knights opened up the 2019 season on Thursday, May 23 at Bellevue. There, the Knights swept the Comets by scores of 13-1 and 14-0 in games that ended early due to the 10-run mercy rule.
In game one, North Cedar broke open a 1-0 game in the top of the third with a 5-run inning to take a 6-0 lead. Bellevue scored a run in the 4th to get on the scoreboard 6-1, but North Cedar responded with a 7-run top of the 5th to take over the game.
North Cedar had 15 hits in the game and 6 stolen bases. Alyssa He e nger and Kassidie Galloway each had three hits and Kendall Smith, Alyssa Barnhart, and Katelyn Jackson each had two hits in the game. Barnhart, Smith and Galloway each had 2 RBI’s. Smith was the winning pitcher working ve innings and striking out seven. She gave up three hits and one earned run.
In game two, North Cedar scored runs in each of the six innings of the game with single runs in the first, third and fifth innings and three-run innings in the second and fourth and a ve-run sixth.
North Cedar 8th grader Alyssa He e nger was the winning pitcher, with a 6-inning complete game shutout. She struck out 8, walked no one, and gave up three hits. He e nger was 2-for-3 at the plate with a home run, double and 3 RBI’s.
North Cedar had nine hits in the game. Alyssa Barnhart, Kendall Smith each had two hits. Smith had 2 RBI’s while Carley Meier had 3 RBI’s.
