TIPTON — Two teams with two different make-ups met Monday in Tipton in the season and River Valley Conference opening golf meet at the Tipton Country Club. The Tigers fell 172 to 192 to Wilton, a team that some pick to finish at the top of the RVC this year. The Beavers used three individual performances and depth of their line-up to get the win.
“It was a good start to our season,” said Wilton golf coach Nick Dohrmann. “The boy’s played well and Jake Fratzke was the meet medalist with a score of 39,” he said.
The Beaver senior who reached the state golf meet in 2015 looked like he is aiming for that again, turning in a score of 39 to earn medalist honors. Wilton’s Tyler Hartman and Jared Townsend each shot 44 to earn runner-up medalist honors. Other Wilton scores were Nolan Leaton 45, Brayton Wade 47 and Brock Hartley 48.
Tipton was led by the pair of Keith Penningroth and Luke Becker with each scoring 46. Zach Ford added a score of 48.
Tipton golf coach Heath Hesse said that he would like to see his team total closer to 185.
“I guess I'd say our goal is going to be closer to 185. Right now I'd be happy to average less than 185 for 9 holes on the year. 192 is 20 strokes off of last year's pace, but we know this is a rebuilding year and I think that less than 185 is a reasonable place to start,” said Hesse.
Other Tipton scores were Trevor Brennan 52, Jake McDonald 55 and Jacob Tischuk 56.
The Beavers also won the junior varsity meet by a score of 219 to 236.
Other Tipton scores were Isaac Brennan 59, Brendan Nantz 61, Steve Wethington 68, Colin Chambliss 72 and Kael Jauron 73.
Other Wilton scores were Derek McQuillen 52, Zach Channon 52, Douglas Weise 65, Colton Berggren 70 and Hunter Hartung 81.
The Tigers are off until next Monday when they play at Iowa City Regina at Brown Deer Golf Course. The Tigers will play in their first Invitational a week from Friday (April 10) at Solon’s Lake McBride Golf Course.
“We will get back to practicing. To get better we need to hone in on our short game and develop that touch you need to be able to score. It's difficult as we have so many kids out for golf with a limited amount of space to work in, but just we’ll narrow our focus where we need to in order to get better,” said Hesse.
Wilton also is off until Monday when they play Durant at Wahkonsa Golf Course. The Beavers also will play in their first Invitational on April 10 at Solon.
