MT. VERNON — The Tipton and North Cedar boy’s track and field teams competed at the annual River Valley Conference indoor track and field meet last Thursday. The meet, held at Cornell College in Mt. Vernon, gave RVC schools one final tune-up before the first outdoor meets this week. The meet had an abbreviated event list. Cascade won the most events at the meet with four while both West Liberty and NE Goose Lake each won two events.
The Tigers did not win an event at the meet. Wes Zell nearly won the 60-meter hurdles, finishing second in 8.68 behind Will MCCallister from Cascade. Zell placed 11th in the 200-meter dash. Quinten Mesick placed 4th in the 60-meter dash in 7.64 and Ben Ellis placed 5th in the 1,600-meter run in 5:05.86. Sam Bierman nearly cracked the top-10 with an 11th place finish in 5:27.40 in the 1,600-meter run.
A pair of Tigers nearly cracked the top-10 in the 800-meter run. Conor Cromer placed 11th in 2:23.10 and Noah Jedlicka placed 12th in 2:23.18.
In field events, Tipton sophomore Andrew Stewart placed third with a best jump of 6-feet, 2-inches. Kolton Crock tied for fourth place in the shot put with a best throw of 45-feet, 8.5 inches.
The Tigers best relay finish came from their 4X400-meter relay team of Dalton Clark, Quinten Mesick, Dillon McCollough and Isak Skeie. The team placed fifth in a time of 3:46.18. The Tigers 4X200-meter relay team of Clark, Mesick, Blaise Thumma and Jaxson Murphy placed 7th in 1:41.19. The Tigers 4X800-meter relay team of Bryce Deerberg, Austin Lenz, Gabe Peach and Trent Pelzer placed 9th in 9:30.44.
The Knights won one event, the 200-meter dash. Greg Hansen won the event in a time of 23.933, beating out Northeast Goose Lake’s Braeden Hoyer by the narrowest of margins as Hoyer finished the race in a time of 23.940.
In individual events, North Cedar had several high finishes. Seamus Raney was the runner-up in the 800-meter run in 2:13.54 to lead the way. Bryce Bemer was 4th in the 60-meter dash in 7.46, and Miles McCullough placed 7th in the 60-meter hurdles in 9.09 and Treat Spahr was 9th in the same event. Jacob Jensen placed 5th in the 200-meter dash in 25.13 as well rounding out the Knights top-10 finishers.
In field events, the Knights got top-10 finishes from Aaron Woodward and Greg Hansen. Woodward placed third in the shot put with a best throw of 46-feet, 2-inches. He was less than three inches away from second place. Iowa City Regina’s Jared Brinkman won the event with a throw of 59-7. Hansen placed 7th in the high jump with a best jump of 6-feet, no inches. Braeden Hoyer from Northeast Goose Lake won the event with a best jump of 6-feet, 8-inches.
North Cedar’s best relay finish came from their 4X200-meter relay team of Hansen, Jacob Jensen, Keon McCullough and Ethan Sahr. The team placed 6th in a time of 1:41.19. The Knights placed 10th in the 4X400-meter relay and 11th in the 4X800-meter relay.
Two area schools did not compete at the RVC meet. Both Wilton and Durant were on spring break last week.
The Tigers and Knights will run at the first of two Tipton co-ed meets on Tuesday. The Tigers will travel to Cascade Thursday for their second meet of the season.
