WILTON — The Tipton Tiger girl’s golf team made a statement Monday afternoon on the road, beating a good Wilton team by 10 strokes. The Tigers began their 2017 season with a bang, beating the Beavers who return three players from their district qualifying team last year including Jesup sectional medalist Alyssa Anderson. Monday, though small in numbers, the Tigers got a score of 47 from senior Kailee Meyer to earn medalist honors at the meet and lead the way. Tipton’s Brittany Huinker was close behind, scoring a 49 while the other Tipton scores were Rylee Conrad 52 and Abby Duwe 55.
Wilton’s Tess Kerkhof was the runner-up medalist at the meet with a score of 48. Eleney Owens scored a 52 and Alyssa Anderson a 56. All three were on the sectional winning team a year ago.
Other Wilton scores were Annabel Grings 57, Riley Hammann 59, Tatum Oveson 67.
“This was a great chance to get everyone meet experience. Our team score is close to what I would have anticipated our girls shooting this early in the season. Along with all of the other teams in the area, we have been fighting with the weather to get out to the golf course,” said Wilton golf coach Jamie Meyer.
“We are in need of some consistent good days of weather so that we can increase our swing reps in order to build more consistent, reliable swings that the girls can trust. Tess played really well and earned runner-up medalist honors with a 48,” he said.
The Beavers won the junior varsity meet by a score of 212 to 339. Wilton’s Taylor Garvin was the medalist with a score of 61 and teammate Katelyn Boeding was the runner-up medalist with a score of 75. Other Wilton scores were: Savannah Shilling 76, Lexi Bartell 77 and Anna McQuillen 77.
Tipton was led by Tori Peach with a score of 76. Other Tipton scores were Madeline Waltz 77, Haylee Ham 87 and McKenzie Himes 99.
The Tigers are back in action on Monday April 10 when they host Iowa City Regina. The Tigers then play at Mid-Prairie and home against West Liberty in their next two meets in mid-April.
The Beavers are off until Monday, April 10 when they host Durant at Wahkonsa Golf Course. The Beavers then are off until April 18 when they play West Branch at Elks Golf Course in Iowa City. The first Invitational for the Beavers is Thursday, April 20 at Mid-Prairie at the Kalona Golf Club.
