CEDAR RAPIDS — Tipton girl’s basketball coach Chad Rezac will be one of four coaches getting one more game to manage this season.  Rezac was selected by the Iowa Girls Coaches Association to coach one of their four senior All-Star teams this weekend at the annual IGCA Larry Niemeyer Senior Games in Cedar Rapids.
Games will be on Saturday and Sunday.  Classes 3A-5A on Saturday and classes 1A and 2A on Sunday.  The games are at Kirkwood Community College, Johnson Hall Gymnasium in Cedar Rapids.  The games are two, 20-minute halves.
“It’s a nice honor.  I have coached girl’s basketball for eight years now.  Tipton has had some kids play in these games that I have coached and to be involved like this, to coach in this event, is really something special,” said Rezac.
The selection process for the rosters began earlier this year with 15 per team with the final rosters being paired down to 10 with alternates.
“It’s exciting.  To give the kids another chance to put on their jersey and play with kids from all over the state in a college setting is really a nice honor and opportunity for them,” said Rezac.
Rezac will be familiar with some of the players.  Two of his four guards will be from the River Valley Conference in West Branch senior Haley Mullinix and Durant senior Aubrey Werthmann.
Werthmann averaged 15.7 points a game and Mullinix 13.9.  They were second and fourth this season in made three pointers with Werthman drilling 62 and Mullinix connecting on 55 three-point attempts.
Werthman shot 84-percent from the free throw line and had 49 steals and 39 assists and was third on the Wildcats team in rebounds this year.  Mullinix had 71 steals and 60 assists, the second highest total on her team and was fifth on the team in rebounds, nearly giving the Bears five players with 100 rebounds or more this season.
Also playing guard will be Alexis Valvick (7.2 ppg) from North Union and Halle Gray from Woodbury Central (17.3 ppg, 32 made 3’s, 73.2-FT, 68 steals)
Forwards on the team are led by Maquoketa Valley’s Brianna Mensen.  Mensen received first team All State honors by the Iowa Newspaper Association and averaged 19.3 points and 7.5 rebounds a game this year for the Wildcats.
Other forwards are Paige McElfish from Nodaway Valley (14.7 ppg, 12.8 rebounds a game, 97 steals, 61 assists).  Randi Robinson from Treynor (8.2 ppg, 5.8 rebounds per game, 47 blocked shots), Ally Smith from Lisbon (14.1 ppg, 6.6 rebounds per game, 16 blocked shots), Britta Harberts from Sibley-Ocheyeden (11.4 ppg, 9.3 rebounds per game), and   Allyson Rose from West Monona (11.6 ppg, 7.5 rebounds per game, 80 blocked shots, 49 steals).
Werthman, Gray, Mensen, Smith, Rose and Harberts were the leading scorers for their teams this year. McElfish was second on her team in scoring, but led in the other stat categories listed above.
