WILTON — The Wilton Beaver football team had a spectacular home opener last week albeit a day earlier than the normal Football Friday night. Weather concerns, with the recent rains, and about getting the football game in, in its entirety without delays, prompted both schools to agree to move the game to Thursday last week. So, Thursday Night lights happened and Wilton brought an offensive explosion and a defensive wall to stop the Rebels 50-8 to improve to 2-0 through the first two weeks. The Rebels, who lost in week 1 to Camanche, fell to 0-2.
Wilton had 348 yards of total offense in the game and had 17 first downs. Wilton rushed for 217 yards and averaged 8.3-yards per carry in the game. Six Beavers carried the football in the game, led by senior Collin McCrabb who topped 100 yards for the second straight week on 12 carries. Brian Stillman rushed for 67 yards and two touchdowns. McCrann and Jackson Hull each scored rushing touchdowns.
Quarterback Jerome Mays passed for 131 yards on 15 completions. He had three touchdown passes. Cory Anderson caught seven passes for 65 yards and two touchdowns. Brock Hartley caught his first touchdown pass of the season and caught four passes for 48 yards. McCrabb and Ronen Santiago each had two receptions.
Defensively, Anderson led in tackles with 9 while Mays had 7. McCrabb, Patrick Barszczewski Clayton Cooling Brayton Wade, and Brock Hartley each had six tackles.
Northeast had 173 yards of total offense and had 14 first downs in the football game. Nate Lange passed for 153 yards on 25-of-37 pass attempts with one touchdown and one interception. Dakota Stevenson led Rebel rushers with 48 yards on 12 carries. Three Rebel receivers had at least eight receptions in the game. Stevenson led Northeast with nine catches for 44 yards. Braeden Hoyer caught eight passes for 61 yards and a touchdown and Dawson Stoll caught eight passes for 48 yards. Defensively, Stoll led Northeast in tackles with 11 while Stevenson added 6.
The Beavers will play two more non-district games before opening district play on Friday, September 21. Through the first two weeks of the season, four of the six class 1A district 5 teams have won a game in the first two weeks and all six have scored points. Four of the six teams have scored at least 40 points combined in their first two games of the year.
Wilton got the football first and marched down the field in 10 plays covering 60 yards to score the first points of the game. A touchdown pass from Jerome Mays to Cory Anderson for 7 yards and a Brock Hartley PAT gave Wilton a 7-0 lead four minutes into the game. That score stood until the second quarter.
After their defense holding the Rebels out of the end zone after Northeast had a first and goal situation at the 6-yard line, the Beavers went 80 yards in nine plays scoring their second touchdown of the game on a Collin McCrabb 3-yard run with 9:15 left before halftime. That score made it 14-0. On the ensuing Northeast drive, the Beavers forced a three and out and punting situation for the Rebels. On the punt, Wilton blocked it when Clayton Cooling blocked the punt, giving Wilton good field position for their next drive, the Rebels 26-yard line. After an incomplete pass on first down, Brian Stillman carried the football 26 yards for another Wilton score, extending the Beavers lead to 21-0.
Northeast scored their only points of the game with 43 seconds left in the first half on a 7-yard touchdown pass from Nathaniel Lange to Braeden Hoyer. A Lange pass to Dawson Stoll for the 2-point conversion, cut the Beavers lead to 21-8 at halftime.
Wilton took command of the football game in the third quarter, scoring two minutes into the second half with 10:45 left in the third on a touchdown pass from Mays to Brock Hartley that went for 21 yards. That score gave Wilton a 28-8 lead.
Wilton added 22 points in the final quarter to take command of the football game. Another Mays to Anderson scoring pass, followed by Stillman’s second touchdown run and Jackson Hull’s first varsity touchdown accounted for the points.
