Tigers Win Monticello Meet, Place 4th In 14-Team Home Meet


  TIPTON — The Tipton boy’s cross-country team ran in two meets last week, one at home and one at Monticello last Saturday. The Tigers won the 34th Monticello Invitational last Saturday, scoring 40 team points, 34 in front of second place Western Dubuque. The Tigers placed 4th at their own home Invitational last Tuesday out of 14 teams. The Tigers are at the English Valleys Invitational Tuesday and run at Solon on Monday, September 17.

  At Monticello, the Tigers dominated the 14-team meet finishing with a team-best 40 points, placing three runners in the top-5 and all five scoring places in the top-16 finishers. Sophomore Caleb Shumaker won his first meet of the season crossing the finish line in first place in a time of 16:53. The second place overall finisher, Chris Guise from Davenport Assumption finished in 17:10. Shumaker is ranked No. 9 in the individual 2A runner list.

  In the team race, the Tigers were one of four ranked teams in the 14-team field. The Tigers were the highest, 3rd in 2A along with CPU (9th in 3A), Monticello (8th in 2A), and Maquoketa Valley (9th in 1A). The Tigers were 34 points ahead of second place Western Dubuque and 53 points ahead of the home team, Monticello Panthers who placed third with 93 points. CPU was 4th, Maquoketa Valley was 5th.

  Two other Tigers placed in the top-5 with Trent Pelzer placing 4th in 17:18 and Ben Ellis placing 5th in 17:22. The two Tigers are also ranked in the individual 2A runner rankings. Pelzer is 14th and Ellis is 16th.

  Other Tipton finishers were 14th Landon Hill in 18:04, 16th Andrew Olseen in 18:05, 24th Noah Jedlicka in 18:46, and 36th Gabe Peach in 19:10.

  The Wilton boy’s placed 11th at the Monticello meet with a team score of 282. Zach Hein led Wilton finishers with a 7th place finish in a time of 17:41. Isaac Hunter placed 54th, just outside of the top-50 finishers, in a time of 19:42. Other Wilton finishers were Ethan Bailey 60th, Kael Brisker 70th, Mason Baker 84th, and Gavin Reid 86th.

Tigers 4th At Home Invitational
  TIPTON — The Tipton boy’s cross-country team got their first look at some teams at their home meets on Tuesday, September 4. There, the Tigers placed fourth with 57 team points. Tipton was second to 4th ranked class 3A school Clear Creek-Amana who placed four runners in the top-10 finishers including overall champion Jack Sexton who won in 17:22.

  Tipton had three top-10 finishers at the meet. Caleb Shumaker was second in 17:35 while Trent Pelzer was 7th in 18:21 and Ben Ellis was 9th in 18:29.

  Other Tipton finishers were Landon Hill 18th, Noah Jedlicka 22nd, Andrew Olseen 24th and Gabe Peach 25th.

  Other area teams at the meet were Durant, Wilton, and North Cedar. The Wildcats placed 5th in the team race. Durant was led by two, top-20 finishers. Jack Voss led Durant with an 11th place finish in 18:35 and Easton Botkins placed 20th in 19:18. Anthony Mundt placed 31st to give Durant, three top-40 finishers.

  Wilton placed 12th in the team race. Zach Hein led Wilton finishers with a 16th place finish in 18:54. Isaac Hunter placed 41st in 20:34 to give Wilton two, top-50 runners at the meet. North Cedar had only one runner compete. That was Jacob Spahr who placed 93rd in 24:48.
