TIPTON — The Tipton volleyball team continued their recent success against Iowa City Regina, earning a 3-0 victory over the Regals to start River Valley Conference play last Thursday at home. The Tigers had been off since the Lisbon Tournament on Monday, August 20, a 10-day layoff. The time off did not affect the Tigers much as they were able to get their fifth win of the season to improve to 3-0. Tipton won the match by scores of 25-14, 25-17 and 25-14. Regina fell to 2-3 and lost their third match in their last four tries.
The Tigers ran their win streak against the Regals to seven matches. Tipton last lost to the Regals in their 2014 regular season matchup at Regina in a 3-0 loss. Since the two teams have played seven matches, including last week, with Tipton winning all seven including three matches without dropping a set. In the last 15 meetings between the schools, going back to 2008, Tipton holds a 12-3 record against the Regals.
The Tigers remain ranked high in the latest Iowa Girl’s High School Athletic Union Class 3A volleyball poll. The Tigers remain ranked No. 2 after starting the 2018 season there in the IGHSAU preseason rankings. Two other River Valley Conference schools are ranked, both in 3A. Camanche is ranked 9th and West Liberty 10th.
In the first set, Tipton won 25-14 and scored the final six points of the set, five of which coming from the serves of Laken Hermiston. The 11-point final set margin was the Tigers biggest in the set. The Tigers started the match on defense and Blake Ehler received the first Regal serve. Ehler passed to Amanda Smith who set Sommer Daniel for the kill and a 1-0 lead. That quick pattern would repeat itself in the set and the match as a whole. Ehler would tap over the ball and see if fall between the Regal defense to get Tipton to 10 points in the set first to take a 10-4 lead, their biggest in the set to that point. Later, Karlee Kamberling received a Regal serve and passed the ball to Smith who again set Daniel for a big kill, to give the Tigers a 15-10 lead. The Tigers would lead by seven, 18-11 after an Emily Hermsen kill and 19-12 before the Regals got within five points, 19-14.
In the second set, Regina played the Tigers closer in the final set score of 25-17, but the Tigers were in control of the whole set. The Regals took their first lead in the match at 2-1 early, having not led at all in the first set. The Tigers took a 3-2 lead on a side-out point and then Hermiston went to work again. Hermiston served eight straight points before Regina took a timeout. In the 8-0 run, Hermiston had two ace serves, the Regals had three-hit errors and another point went to the Tigers on a double block from Kamryn Chapman and Blake Ehler. Amanda Smith had the only Tiger kill in the run. After the timeout, Tipton added two more points to take their biggest lead in the set at 13-2.
The Regals cut the Tiger lead to eight, 14-6, and later to six points 20-14. The Tigers would outscore the Regals 5-3 to take the set 25-17.
In the third set, down two sets to none, Regina scored the first points of the set, giving them the lead for only the second time in the match. The lead was short-lived. Tipton tied the match at 1-1 with a Jamie Kofron kill and took a 2-1 lead, one they would not give up, on a Sommer Daniel kill. The Tigers were the first to ten points and led 10-5 after a side out point. The Tigers led by six, their biggest lead in the set to that point, 11-5 on an Emily Hermsen kill. A Smith set for an Ehler kill and a Daniel set for an Ehler kill on back-to-back possessions gave Tipton an 8-point, 13-5 lead. The Tigers were the first to 15 points, 15-7, after an Amanda Smith kill. Tipton led by 10 points, 17-7 after a Daniel kill and would finish the set outscoring the Regals 8-7 to claim the set and the match.
Tipton had a kill efficiency of 0.238 in the match with 38 kills in 101 attack attempts. The Tigers were led by Sommer Daniel with 12 kills while Amanda Smith and Blake Ehler each had 8. Daniel and Smith led in assists with 21 and 12 respectively. Daniel led in digs with 14 and Ehler had 10. The Tigers served 65-for-73 as a team with nine ace serves. Laken Hermiston was 22-for-23 with 2 aces while Jamie Kofron was 13-for-15 with 2 aces and Daniel was 12-for-13 with 3 aces.
The Regals had a kill efficiency of 0.013 in the match with only 13 kills in 77 attack attempts. Tipton was able to hold down the Regals top hitter, Jaedynn Evans who had eight kills. Evans has committed to play volleyball for Central Michigan University next year. Kennedy Wallace had 11 assists, 10 digs and served 10-for-10 with an ace. Evans led Regina in digs with 19.
