CAMANCHE — The North Cedar Knights saw a win slip through their hands last Friday at Camanche. There, the Knights let a 17-7 halftime lead get away as the Indians outscored North Cedar 19-7 in the second half of a 26-24 Camanche win. The football game was the third straight game that North Cedar has scored at least 18 points. The Knights scored 18 or more points only three times the entire 2017 season. The Knights fall to 0-3 overall and will return home this week to play Columbus Junction.

North Cedar had a big drive to start the football game after getting the first turnover in the game. The Knights opened the game’s scoring with a Logan Thimmes touchdown run to grab an early 7-0 lead. The Knights defense held on the ensuring Camanche possession. The Indians had a long touchdown called back and had to punt the football back to the knights. The 7-0 score would hold after the first quarter.

North Cedar would take a 14-0 lead after Thimmes’ second touchdown run of the first half, this one a 17-yard run to give the Knights a two-score lead. Camanche got on the scoreboard on an 11-yard Baylor Crigger touchdown run to trim the Knight lead to 14-7. North Cedar came back and drove down the field to give themselves an opportunity to score more points. A big pass play from Ethan Sahr to Tyler Alexander that went for 28 yards to the 15-yard line put the Knights in the red zone late in the first half. Three pass attempts at the end zone came up empty for North Cedar. The Knights did get points from the drive, as Brody Hawtrey kicked a 29-yard field goal as time expired in the first half to send the Knights into the locker room up 17-7.

Camanche scored twice in the third quarter to take their first lead of the game at 20-17 as the game went to the fourth quarter. A Jordan Lawrence 1-yard run cut the Knights lead to 17-14 and another Lawrence touchdown run of 7 yards gave the Indians their first lead of the game at 20-17.

Each team scored a touchdown in the final quarter. A 7-yard Raul Esparza touchdown run early in the fourth, gave Camanche a 26-17 lead. The drive was set up by the Knights trying to make a play, going for it in a fourth and short situation near mid-field. The Knights did not convert the opportunity. The Indians used a 58-yard run by Esparza to flip the field and get inside the 10-yard line for the eventual score.

North Cedar kept fighting. Late in the game, Sahr found Kael Unruh streaking down the sideline wide open for a play that went 40 yards. That set up the Knights in the red zone and eventually led to a 1-yard Ethan Sahr touchdown run, putting the score at 26-24 Camanche. The Knights tried to execute an onside kick, but failed to recover the football. The Indians then ran out the clock to secure the victory.

Offensively, Ethan Sahr passed for 156 yards on 10-of-20 pass attempts. Logan Thimmes rushed for 88 yards on 16 carries with two touchdowns while Brody Hawtrey rushed 24 times for 75 yards. Thimmes led Knight receivers with three receptions for 26 yards. Three Knights had two or more catches in the game and four different receivers caught a pass. Defensively, Thimmes had a team high 12 tackles while Tyler Thurston had 9 and Caden Wendt 8.
